Then the route moves deep into Sikkim to Pelling — perhaps the single finest viewpoint of Kangchenjunga (8,586m) in the entire region. At just 2,150m but positioned directly facing the mountain across a deep valley, Pelling's sunrise views are extraordinary. The nearby Pemayangtse Monastery (one of the oldest and most important monasteries in Sikkim) and the Rabdentse ruins (the former royal capital of Sikkim) add extraordinary depth.
Kalimpong's flower market, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, and silk-route heritage follow before the circuit concludes in Gangtok — the sparkling Sikkimese capital with Rumtek Monastery, the Tsomgo glacial lake, and the lively MG Marg promenade.

Transfer from Bagdogra or NJP. Drive to Darjeeling (90 km, 3 hrs) on the Hill Cart Road through ascending tea gardens. Evening: Chowrasta and Observatory Hill.

Drive from Darjeeling to Pelling (100 km, ~4 hrs) — through Jorethang, crossing the Teesta River and climbing into West Sikkim through cardamom forests and remote mountain villages. Arrive Pelling (2,150m) and check in. The first view of Kangchenjunga from your hotel window — at 8,586m, face-on, filling the northern sky — is one of the great arrival moments in Indian travel. Evening: sundowners on the viewpoint terrace with the mountain turning orange.
A full day around Pelling — the highlights of West Sikkim. Pemayangtse Monastery (1705 CE, Nyingma school) — one of the oldest and most revered monasteries in Sikkim, with extraordinary murals, a 7-storey wooden model of the celestial palace Zangdog Palri, and panoramic mountain views. Rabdentse ruins (17th century) — the former royal capital of independent Sikkim, abandoned after the Gurkha invasion of 1814; the palace ruins on a forested ridge with Kangchenjunga behind are among the most atmospheric heritage sites in the Eastern Himalaya.
Singshore Bridge (the highest suspension bridge in the Eastern Himalaya at 198m above a deep gorge) and the sacred Khecheopalri Lake (the 'wish-fulfilling lake', revered by both Buddhists and Hindus, surrounded by dense forest).
Drive from Pelling to Kalimpong (140 km, ~4.5 hrs) via the Teesta River valley. Arrive Kalimpong — the former Silk Route trading post between Tibet and Bengal. Afternoon: the famous flower market (orchids and gladioli grown on mountain terraces), Zong Dog Palri Fo-Brang Monastery (designed by the Dalai Lama), and Thongsa Gumba (1692). Arts and Crafts Centre for Tibetan and Sikkimese handloom.
Drive to Gangtok (75 km, ~2.5 hrs). Afternoon: Rumtek Monastery (23 km from Gangtok) — the most important Karma Kagyu monastery in India; extraordinary thangkas, Nalanda Buddhist Institute. Do Drul Chorten Stupa. Evening: MG Marg promenade for dinner and the energy of Gangtok at night.
Pre-dawn Tashi Viewpoint — the last Kangchenjunga sunrise of the tour. Tsomgo (Changu) Lake (3,780m) — yaks, Brahminy ducks, and alpine flora. Drive to Bagdogra (125 km, ~4 hrs) for departure. Tour concludes at Bagdogra Airport or NJP Station.

Pelling offers arguably the finest face-on view of Kangchenjunga in the entire Eastern Himalaya. While Darjeeling's Tiger Hill is higher (3,636m) and more famous, Pelling (2,150m) is positioned directly across a deep valley from the southern face of Kangchenjunga — the mountain fills the entire northern horizon. On a clear morning from your hotel room window, the scale of the peak is extraordinary. Pelling also has the remarkable Rabdentse ruins and Pemayangtse Monastery, making it the historical heart of Sikkim as well as its finest viewpoint.
Yes — North Sikkim (Lachung and Yumthang Valley) is one of the most spectacular Himalayan destinations in India, with alpine meadows filled with rhododendrons in spring, a hot spring at Yume Samdong, and the Zero Point snowfield at 4,428m. It requires an additional Restricted Area Permit (all nationalities) and 2 extra nights added to Gangtok. We can add this extension to any of our Sikkim tours. Best season for Yumthang is April–June (rhododendron bloom) and May–June (clear mountain visibility).
March–May (spring) brings clear skies and rhododendrons in bloom — the best views of Kangchenjunga. October–November (post-monsoon) offers crystal-clear mountain visibility and golden autumn colours. December–February is cold but scenic, with possible snowfall. Avoid June–September: heavy monsoon rains reduce visibility and can cause landslides on mountain roads.
Indian nationals do not require a separate permit for most of Sikkim (including Gangtok). Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Sikkim, obtainable at the border checkpost or online. Additional Restricted Area Permits (RAP) are required for North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang) and certain border areas. Our team arranges all permits as part of your booking.

On a clear morning from Tiger Hill above Darjeeling, or from Tashi Viewpoint near Gangtok, the sunrise on Kangchenjunga (8,586m — the world's third highest peak) is one of the great natural spectacles of India. The summit appears to glow in shades of gold, orange, and rose as the light intensifies. It is genuinely breathtaking — and genuinely dependent on weather.
