The classic Eastern Himalaya short tour — combining Darjeeling, the Queen of Hill Stations, with Gangtok, the sparkling capital of Sikkim, in five beautifully paced days. Two completely different personalities; one extraordinary mountain backdrop.
Darjeeling gives you the legendary Tiger Hill sunrise over Kangchenjunga, the UNESCO Himalayan toy train, world-famous first-flush tea estates, and the Buddhist monasteries of the hill. Gangtok gives you the sacred Rumtek Monastery (one of Tibetan Buddhism's most important seats), the high-altitude Tsomgo glacial lake at 3,780m, and the lively MG Marg promenade with its momos, thukpa, and Sikkimese cuisine.
The two towns are 100 km apart and connected by a spectacular mountain road — the drive between them is an experience in itself, with Teesta River gorges, tea gardens, and bamboo forests.

Welcome! Transfer from Bagdogra or NJP, then drive the famous Hill Cart Road to Darjeeling (90 km, ~3 hrs). Check in and evening walk on Chowrasta and Observatory Hill.
4:00 AM: Tiger Hill for Kangchenjunga sunrise. Return for breakfast. Batasia Loop toy train ride (UNESCO steam train, Darjeeling–Ghoom). Ghoom Monastery (1850, Maitreya Buddha). Happy Valley Tea Estate: guided tour, manufacture process, and Darjeeling tea tasting. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Natural History Museum in the afternoon.
Drive from Darjeeling to Gangtok (100 km, ~3.5 hrs) — through Siliguri plains and then up the NH10 Teesta River corridor, one of the most scenic drives in the Eastern Himalaya. Arrive Gangtok and check in. Evening: MG Marg promenade — momos, thukpa, Sikkimese snacks, and the lively energy of Gangtok at dusk.
Pre-dawn: Tashi Viewpoint sunrise — Kangchenjunga and the full eastern Himalayan panorama. Breakfast, then Rumtek Monastery (23 km) — the most important Karma Kagyu monastery in India, with extraordinary thangkas, ritual instruments, and the Nalanda Institute of Buddhist Studies. Afternoon: Tsomgo (Changu) Lake (3,780m) — a glacial sacred lake with yaks on the slopes and Brahminy ducks on the water. The mountain light on the lake in the afternoon is remarkable.
Morning: Do Drul Chorten Stupa and its 108 prayer wheels. Gangtok Ropeway cable car for panoramic views. Drive back to Bagdogra (125 km, ~4 hrs) for your departure flight or train. Tour concludes at Bagdogra Airport or NJP.

Your questions, answered
Both are extraordinary but completely different. Darjeeling is older, more colonial in character, with the tea estate heritage and the UNESCO toy train. It is at a higher altitude (2,042m) and the views of Kangchenjunga from Tiger Hill are the most famous in the region. Gangtok is cleaner, more modern, and feels more Tibetan Buddhist in character — the monasteries are larger and more active. If you have 5 days, this combined tour gives you the best of both. If you have only 4 days, we recommend Darjeeling for nature and heritage, Gangtok for culture and monasteries.
March–May (spring) brings clear skies and rhododendrons in bloom — the best views of Kangchenjunga. October–November (post-monsoon) offers crystal-clear mountain visibility and golden autumn colours. December–February is cold but scenic, with possible snowfall. Avoid June–September: heavy monsoon rains reduce visibility and can cause landslides on mountain roads.
Indian nationals do not require a separate permit for most of Sikkim (including Gangtok). Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Sikkim, obtainable at the border checkpost or online. Additional Restricted Area Permits (RAP) are required for North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang) and certain border areas. Our team arranges all permits as part of your booking.

On a clear morning from Tiger Hill above Darjeeling, or from Tashi Viewpoint near Gangtok, the sunrise on Kangchenjunga (8,586m — the world's third highest peak) is one of the great natural spectacles of India. The summit appears to glow in shades of gold, orange, and rose as the light intensifies. It is genuinely breathtaking — and genuinely dependent on weather. We always plan an early morning sunrise attempt; if the first morning is cloudy, we try again the next day.
