Six days that combine the best of the Eastern Himalaya into one perfectly structured tour — Darjeeling's world-famous tea and Tiger Hill sunrise, the remote North Sikkim highland of Lachung and the extraordinary Yumthang Valley, and Gangtok's Buddhist monasteries and sacred Tsomgo Lake.
The classic Darjeeling section opens the tour with the UNESCO toy train, the world's finest Darjeeling tea at Happy Valley Estate, and the legendary Tiger Hill sunrise where Kangchenjunga (8,586m) burns gold in the first light. Two nights in Darjeeling give enough time to absorb the colonial heritage, the mountain views, and the extraordinary tea culture.
From Darjeeling, the route moves directly into North Sikkim — stopping in Gangtok only to collect the Restricted Area Permit before continuing north to Lachung at 2,700m. The next morning, the pre-dawn drive to Yumthang Valley (3,564m) is the highlight of the tour: a high-altitude river meadow lined with rhododendrons in spring and alpine flowers across seasons.
The tour concludes with two full days in Gangtok — Tashi Viewpoint sunrise, Rumtek Monastery, Tsomgo Lake, and the lively MG Marg promenade. A concentrated, high-impact Eastern Himalaya itinerary that does not waste a single day.

Welcome! Transfer from Bagdogra or NJP, then the famous Hill Cart Road climb to Darjeeling. Check in. Evening: Chowrasta promenade and Observatory Hill with prayer flags and Himalayan views.
4:00 AM Tiger Hill for Kangchenjunga sunrise. Batasia Loop toy train ride (UNESCO, narrow gauge steam). Ghoom Monastery (1850, Maitreya Buddha). Happy Valley Tea Estate: guided tour of cultivation and manufacture, first-flush tasting. HMI Everest Museum. Padmaja Naidu Zoo (Red Panda).
Drive from Darjeeling to Gangtok (100 km, 3.5 hrs). Brief stop in Gangtok to collect North Sikkim Restricted Area Permits and for lunch. Continue north toward Lachung (119 km, ~4 hrs) — the road follows the Teesta River upstream through deepening gorges. Pass Naga Falls (100m, Sikkim's highest, visible from the road), and the river confluence at Chungthang. The final stretch climbs to Lachung at 2,700m — fir trees, yak pastures, and the cold thin air of the high Himalaya. Check in to your guesthouse for the night.
Pre-dawn drive to Yumthang Valley (24 km, ~1 hr from Lachung) at 3,564m — the Valley of Flowers of the Eastern Himalaya. In spring (mid-April to mid-May) the valley is carpeted with 24+ species of rhododendron, primulas, and Himalayan poppies. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary protects the finest blooms. At other times, the landscape is dramatic alpine terrain with the Teesta River and snow peaks on three sides.
Optional extension: Zero Point (4,428m) — the last outpost before the Chinese border, pure snowfield and silence. Return to Lachung for breakfast, then drive south to Gangtok (3.5 hrs) via the hot spring at Yume Samdong. Check in. Evening: MG Marg promenade dinner.
Pre-dawn Tashi Viewpoint — Kangchenjunga and the full Himalayan range at first light. Rumtek Monastery (23 km, ~45 min) — the most important Karma Kagyu Buddhist monastery in India; extraordinary thangkas and the Nalanda Institute of Buddhist Studies. Tsomgo (Changu) Lake at 3,780m — a sacred glacial lake with yaks, Brahminy ducks, and alpine flora. Namgyal Institute of Tibetology on return to Gangtok.
Morning: Gangtok Ropeway cable car for panoramic city and mountain views. Do Drul Chorten Stupa with its 108 prayer wheels. Drive to Bagdogra (125 km, ~4 hrs) for your departure flight or train. Tour concludes at Bagdogra Airport or NJP.

Your questions, answered
The driving distances are long on Days 3 and 4 (up to 8 hours combined), and the altitude at Yumthang Valley (3,564m) and optionally Zero Point (4,428m) requires some acclimatisation awareness. We recommend drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol the night before the high-altitude day, and telling us in advance if you have any cardiac or respiratory conditions. The pace is otherwise leisurely — no trekking required. Most travellers in good general health manage the altitudes comfortably.
This 6-day tour is a focused, high-impact itinerary: Darjeeling + North Sikkim (Lachung/Yumthang) + Gangtok. The 8-day Sikkim Complete adds Pelling in West Sikkim — with Pemayangtse Monastery and the Rabdentse ruins — and is the more comprehensive experience. If you want to include the finest face-on Kangchenjunga viewpoint (Pelling) and more Sikkimese heritage, choose the 8-day tour. If you prioritise Yumthang's alpine meadows and want to keep the trip shorter, this 6-day version is the right choice.
Mid-April to mid-May is peak bloom at Yumthang Valley — the Teesta River corridor turns a spectacular red, pink, and purple as 24+ species of rhododendron flower simultaneously. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary (adjacent to Yumthang) protects some of the finest stands. Outside this window, the valley is still beautiful — October has clear mountain views and golden autumn tones; June to September is monsoon and the valley is closed to visitors.
Yes — all visitors (Indian and foreign nationals) require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for North Sikkim beyond Chungthang. This is arranged by us in advance as part of your tour. Indian nationals also need a valid photo ID; foreign nationals need their passport and Indian visa. We collect permits in Gangtok on Day 3 before continuing north, so there is no delay to your journey.
