From Tea Gardens to Alpine Meadows — All of Sikkim in Eight Days
Eight days through the full altitude range of the Eastern Himalaya — from Darjeeling's tea gardens at 2,042 metres to the high-altitude meadows of Yumthang Valley at 3,564 metres in North Sikkim, where a river runs through a corridor of rhododendrons in spring that is among the most beautiful scenes in the entire Himalayan range.
The tour opens in Darjeeling — Tiger Hill's legendary sunrise, the UNESCO Himalayan Railway toy train, and the world's finest tea. Then the route descends into West Sikkim to Pelling — the finest face-on viewpoint of Kangchenjunga (8,586m) in the entire region, with Pemayangtse Monastery and the royal ruins of Rabdentse.
From Pelling, the tour heads north into Sikkim's most spectacular and least-visited district: North Sikkim. The drive from Gangtok to Lachung (119 km) passes through increasingly remote mountain terrain — Naga Falls (the highest waterfall in Sikkim), the confluence at Chungthang, and the dramatic alpine valley of Lachung at 2,700m. An overnight in Lachung allows a dawn drive to Yumthang Valley — the Valley of Flowers of the Eastern Himalaya — where the Teesta River runs through meadows lined with primulas, poppies, and over 24 species of rhododendron in bloom (March–May).
The tour concludes in Gangtok — the sparkling Sikkimese capital with Rumtek Monastery, the sacred Tsomgo Lake, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, and the lively MG Marg promenade. Eight days. The complete Sikkim experience.

Welcome! Transfer from Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Station. Drive the famous Hill Cart Road to Darjeeling (90 km, ~3 hrs) through progressively higher tea gardens as the plains disappear below. Check in to your hotel. Evening: Chowrasta promenade and Observatory Hill for first views of the Himalayan skyline and fluttering prayer flags.
4:00 AM: drive to Tiger Hill (3,636m) for the most celebrated mountain sunrise in India — Kangchenjunga (8,586m) turning from grey to gold, and on clear mornings, Everest (8,849m) visible 215 km to the northwest. Return for breakfast, then the Batasia Loop toy train ride (UNESCO steam train, narrow gauge, 1881), Ghoom Monastery (1850, Maitreya Buddha), Happy Valley Tea Estate (guided tour of cultivation and manufacture, tea tasting), and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (Tenzing Norgay's ice axe from the 1953 Everest ascent is on display).
Drive from Darjeeling to Pelling (100 km, ~4 hrs) via Jorethang, crossing the Teesta River into West Sikkim and climbing through cardamom estates and dense mountain forest. Pelling (2,150m) sits directly across a deep valley from the southern face of Kangchenjunga — on arrival, the mountain fills the entire northern horizon in a way that no photograph prepares you for. Check in. Evening: sunset from the viewpoint terrace as Kangchenjunga turns copper and orange.
A full day around Pelling — the historical and spiritual heart of Sikkim. Pemayangtse Monastery (1705 CE, Nyingma school) — one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim, with extraordinary murals, a remarkable seven-storey wooden model of the celestial palace Zangdog Palri, and panoramic Kangchenjunga views from its courtyard. Rabdentse ruins — the 17th-century former royal capital of independent Sikkim, abandoned after the Gurkha invasion of 1814; the hilltop ruins against the backdrop of the mountain are profoundly atmospheric.
Khecheopalri Lake — the sacred 'wish-fulfilling lake' revered by Buddhists and Hindus alike, set in dense forest where the water's surface is kept clear of leaves by birds. Singshore Bridge — the highest suspension bridge in the Eastern Himalaya, 198m above a deep forested gorge.
Drive from Pelling to Gangtok (115 km, ~3.5 hrs). Collect North Sikkim Restricted Area Permits in Gangtok (arranged by us in advance). Brief stop for lunch and to see Do Drul Chorten Stupa's 108 prayer wheels. Continue north toward Lachung (119 km from Gangtok, ~4 hrs) — the road follows the Teesta River upstream through increasingly dramatic gorges, past Naga Falls (Sikkim's highest waterfall at 100m, visible from the road), to the confluence town of Chungthang where three rivers meet. The final climb to Lachung (2,700m) enters alpine territory — yak pastures, fir forests, and the feel of the high Himalaya. Arrive and check in to your guesthouse.
Early morning drive from Lachung to Yumthang Valley (24 km, ~1 hr) at 3,564m — the Valley of Flowers of the Eastern Himalaya. In spring (March–May), the valley floor is carpeted with over 24 species of rhododendron, primulas, and high-altitude poppies in a corridor of extraordinary colour, with the Teesta River running silver through the centre and snow peaks on three sides. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary protects the finest stands.
Optional further drive to Zero Point (4,428m) — the last human settlement before the Chinese border, where the landscape is pure snowfield and rock and the thin air is exhilarating. Return to Lachung for breakfast, then drive back to Gangtok (3.5 hrs) via the hot spring at Yume Samdong. Check in to your Gangtok hotel. Evening: MG Marg promenade for dinner.
Pre-dawn drive to Tashi Viewpoint — Kangchenjunga and the full eastern Himalayan range at first light. Return for breakfast. Drive to Rumtek Monastery (23 km, ~45 min) — the most important Karma Kagyu Buddhist monastery in India, rebuilt by the 16th Karmapa in the 1960s; extraordinary thangka paintings, ritual instruments, and the Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies. Afternoon: Tsomgo (Changu) Lake (35 km from Gangtok) at 3,780m — a sacred glacial lake with yaks grazing on the slopes, Brahminy ducks on the water, and alpine flora all around. Namgyal Institute of Tibetology on return.
Final morning in Gangtok: the Ropeway cable car for panoramic views over the city and distant peaks. Do Drul Chorten Stupa with its 108 prayer wheels — a serene farewell to Sikkim. Drive back to Bagdogra (125 km, ~4 hrs) for your onward flight. The tour concludes at Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Station.

Yumthang (3,564m) is known as the Valley of Flowers of the Eastern Himalaya — a high-altitude river valley in North Sikkim where the Teesta River flows through meadows lined with over 24 species of rhododendron. The peak bloom is mid-April to mid-May, when the entire valley floor turns red, pink, purple, and white. Primulas, irises, and Himalayan poppies bloom alongside. Outside the bloom season (October–December), the valley is a beautiful alpine landscape of rock and sky, often with snow on the surrounding peaks. The valley is closed during the heaviest monsoon months (June–September).
Zero Point (4,428m) is located 23 km beyond Yumthang Valley — the last accessible point before the Chinese border, and the highest point on this tour. The landscape is entirely snowfield and bare rock, the air noticeably thin, and the views extraordinary on clear days. The road is open April–November (conditions permitting). We recommend going if weather and health permit — the additional hour of driving from Yumthang is rewarded with a genuine high-altitude experience and bragging rights. Altitude sickness precautions apply: drink water, ascend slowly, and let us know if you have any cardiac or respiratory conditions.
North Sikkim is safe and well-managed for tourism. The roads are maintained by the Border Roads Organisation. A Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is required for all nationalities — we arrange this in advance as part of your booking. Private vehicles only (no public transport) are permitted beyond Chungthang. Our driver and vehicle are familiar with the route and conditions. Some flexibility is built in for weather delays on the North Sikkim leg — mountain roads can occasionally close due to landslides; we monitor conditions and have contingency plans.
March–May (spring): rhododendrons in bloom at Yumthang, clear mountain views, comfortable temperatures. October–November (autumn): crystal-clear Kangchenjunga visibility, golden foliage, excellent conditions throughout. December–February: cold but scenic, possible snowfall at Lachung and Pelling. Avoid June–September: heavy monsoon, reduced visibility, and risk of road closures in North Sikkim.
