Six days — the perfect Ladakh circuit. This is the tour that most travellers who research Ladakh properly settle on: enough time to acclimatise properly, see Leh's monasteries without rushing, cross Khardung La into Nubra Valley, experience the extraordinary sand dunes with Bactrian camels, drive across the Changthang plateau to Pangong Tso, and return for a final night in Leh.
Nubra Valley (2,900m) is a surprise — after the barren moonscape of Khardung La, the valley is unexpectedly green, with poplars and willow lining the Shyok River. The sand dunes at Hunder rise beside the river in a surreal combination of Himalayan mountain, glacial river, and Sahara-like dune. The Bactrian (double-humped) camels that carry tourists across the dunes are descendants of the caravans that plied the ancient Silk Route from Central Asia through this very valley to Leh.
Pangong Tso (4,350m) — 134 km of colour-shifting saltwater lake on the India-China border — is the tour's emotional climax. An overnight on the lakeshore allows the sunset and the dawn, both of which are extraordinary. The altitude, the silence, the absence of any light pollution, and the impossible blue of the water make Pangong one of the great overnight experiences in all of India.

Welcome! Transfer to hotel. Mandatory acclimatisation rest. Drink water, eat light, no exertion. Gentle bazaar walk in the afternoon if feeling well. Early dinner and bed.
Full day sightseeing. Morning: Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, old city lanes. Afternoon: Shey Palace, Thiksey Monastery (12-storey, 49-ft Maitreya), Hemis Monastery (Ladakh's richest), and Sangam confluence at Nimmu.
Drive from Leh over Khardung La (38 km, ~2 hrs) — 5,359m, one of the world's highest motorable passes. Descend into Nubra Valley (2,900m) — the landscape transforms from barren rock to a surprisingly lush river valley. Visit Diskit Monastery (the oldest in Nubra, with a giant Maitreya Buddha statue looking out over the valley). The Hunder sand dunes — where Bactrian double-humped camels roam between the dunes and the Shyok River against a backdrop of snow peaks — are one of the most surreal landscapes in India. Drive from Nubra to Pangong Tso (150 km, ~5 hrs) via the Shyok River valley and Agham — a route that passes through remote Changthang villages, yak herders, and the dramatic mountain scenery of the eastern Ladakh plateau. Ascend Chang La (5,360m) before the descent to Pangong. Arrive at the lakeshore in the afternoon. Watch the light change on the water through the evening, dine at your lakeshore camp, and sleep at 4,350m under a sky unpolluted by any artificial light.
Rise before dawn for the rose-gold light on Pangong at first light. After breakfast, drive back toward Leh (155 km, ~4.5 hrs) via Chang La. Optional stop at Thiksey Monastery for the 6 AM morning puja (monks chanting, butter lamps, and the monastery at dawn — an extraordinary experience). Check in to your Leh hotel for a final night.
Final morning: Namgyal Tsemo Gompa at dawn for views over the Indus Valley, or a last walk through Leh's Main Bazaar for Ladakhi souvenirs — prayer flags, thangkas, pashmina, and local apricot products. Transfer to Leh Airport. Tour concludes.

Your questions, answered
The Nubra–Pangong route via the Shyok River valley and Chang La (5,360m) is one of the great remote mountain drives in India. The road is well-maintained by the BRO but is genuinely remote — limited phone signal, no petrol stations, and few facilities between Nubra and Pangong. Our 4WD vehicle and experienced driver make this route safe and comfortable. The 150 km journey takes 4–5 hours. We carry extra fuel, water, and basic supplies. This route requires a separate ILP (arranged by us) and the permit must specify this route.
The fastest way is by air — Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport has daily flights from Delhi (1h 10m), Srinagar, Jammu, Chandigarh, and Manali. Book early as seats fill quickly June–September. The alternative is the Srinagar–Leh or Manali–Leh highway (both 2 days of mountain driving, open June–October) — extraordinary road journeys but time-consuming.
Yes — Leh is at 3,524m and some destinations reach 5,300m+. We strongly recommend: arrive by flight, rest on Day 1 (no strenuous activity), drink 3–4 litres of water daily, avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours, and consult your doctor about Diamox (acetazolamide) before travel. Do not attempt this tour if you have cardiac or severe respiratory conditions. Our drivers carry basic medical supplies and know the signs of AMS.
Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Turtuk, and Dah-Hanu. Foreign nationals require Protected Area Permits (PAP) for the same areas plus additional restrictions in some zones. We arrange all permits as part of your booking — this is handled by our Leh office and is included in the tour price.
June–September is the main tourist season — roads open, maximum sunshine, Pangong and Nubra accessible. July–August is peak season (book far in advance). October brings dramatic colours and fewer crowds but some mountain passes may close. May is beautiful but some roads are still opening after winter. December–March: extreme cold (-20°C) but the famous Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar River.
