This is the most comprehensive Ladakh circuit we offer, and it includes a destination most Ladakh visitors never reach: Turtuk.
Turtuk is India's last accessible village before the Pakistani Line of Control — a extraordinary Balti village of apricot orchards, polo grounds, and a culture that speaks Balti (a Tibetan dialect with Arabic loanwords), practises Islam (unlike Buddhist Ladakh), and was part of Pakistan until the 1971 war, when India gained control of this section of the Shyok Valley. The village's 600-year-old Yabgo Khar royal palace, its organic apricot orchards (the finest in Ladakh), and its extraordinarily hospitable community make Turtuk an unmissable addition for any serious Ladakh traveller.
The tour adds Turtuk on Day 4 — an extension of the Nubra Valley drive north along the Shyok River (65 km beyond Hunder, ~2 hrs). The return to Leh via Pangong's Chang La and an overnight on the lakeshore follow the classic circuit. Seven full days, the complete Ladakh experience.

Welcome! Transfer to hotel. Mandatory acclimatisation rest — drink water, eat light, no exertion. Gentle afternoon bazaar walk if feeling well. Early dinner and bed.
Full sightseeing day. Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa. South of Leh: Shey Palace, Thiksey (49-ft Maitreya), Hemis (Ladakh's largest monastery), and Sangam confluence. Magnetic Hill and Pathar Sahib Gurudwara on return.
Over Khardung La (5,359m) into Nubra Valley (2,900m). Diskit Monastery. Hunder sand dunes with Bactrian camels — one of the most surreal landscapes in India. Optional camel ride at sunset. Overnight in Nubra.
Drive north from Hunder along the Shyok River to Turtuk (65 km, ~2 hrs) — India's last accessible village before the Pakistani Line of Control. The drive follows the Shyok's dramatic gorge, with glaciers visible above and the river running turquoise below. Turtuk is extraordinary: a green oasis of apricot orchards, polo grounds, and flat-roofed Balti houses in a Himalayan desert. The villagers are Muslim (unlike Buddhist Ladakh) and speak Balti — a Tibetan dialect with Arabic loanwords, and the culture of pre-partition Baltistan.
Visit the 600-year-old Yabgo Khar royal palace of the Yabgo dynasty — the rulers of this valley for six centuries. The family still lives here and may receive visitors. The organic apricot orchards of Turtuk produce some of the finest apricots in the Himalayan region — try the fresh apricots, dried apricots, and apricot oil. Overnight in Turtuk's simple but welcoming homestays.
Return from Turtuk to Nubra and continue east to Pangong Tso (215 km total, ~7 hrs) via the Shyok River valley and Chang La Pass (5,360m). A long but dramatic drive through some of the most remote mountain terrain in India. Arrive at Pangong in the late afternoon for the evening light on the lake. Overnight on the lakeshore.
Pre-dawn: Pangong Tso at first light — the lake surface turns rose-gold before settling into turquoise. After breakfast drive back to Leh (155 km, ~4.5 hrs). Optional stop at Thiksey for the 6 AM morning puja. Final night in Leh — explore any remaining monasteries or the Leh bazaar.
Final morning: Namgyal Tsemo Gompa at dawn. Last walk through Leh's bazaar for prayer flags, thangkas, pashmina, and apricot products. Transfer to Leh Airport. Tour concludes.

Turtuk is unlike anywhere else in Ladakh — or India. It was part of Pakistan until the 1971 war, when Indian forces gained control of this section of the Shyok Valley. The village's culture, religion (Islam), language (Balti), architecture, and cuisine are all completely different from Buddhist Ladakh. The 600-year-old Yabgo Khar royal palace, the organic apricot orchards (genuinely the finest in the Himalayan region), and the extraordinary hospitality of the Balti community make Turtuk one of the most rewarding destinations in the entire region. Most Ladakh visitors skip it because it requires an extra day. Those who go consistently say it was the highlight of their trip.
Yes — Turtuk is open to Indian and foreign nationals with the appropriate Inner Line Permit (which we arrange). The village is completely peaceful and famously welcoming to tourists. The Yabgo family (former rulers) actively welcome visitors. The proximity to the LoC is evident in the Army presence in the area — this is normal and creates no issues for civilian tourists. The village itself is some distance from any militarily sensitive zone.
The fastest way is by air — Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport has daily flights from Delhi (1h 10m), Srinagar, Jammu, Chandigarh, and Manali. Book early as seats fill quickly June–September. The alternative is the Srinagar–Leh or Manali–Leh highway (both 2 days of mountain driving, open June–October) — extraordinary road journeys but time-consuming.
Yes — Leh is at 3,524m and some destinations reach 5,300m+. We strongly recommend: arrive by flight, rest on Day 1 (no strenuous activity), drink 3–4 litres of water daily, avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours, and consult your doctor about Diamox (acetazolamide) before travel. Do not attempt this tour if you have cardiac or severe respiratory conditions. Our drivers carry basic medical supplies and know the signs of AMS.
Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Turtuk, and Dah-Hanu. Foreign nationals require Protected Area Permits (PAP) for the same areas plus additional restrictions in some zones. We arrange all permits as part of your booking — this is handled by our Leh office and is included in the tour price.
June–September is the main tourist season — roads open, maximum sunshine, Pangong and Nubra accessible. July–August is peak season (book far in advance). October brings dramatic colours and fewer crowds but some mountain passes may close. May is beautiful but some roads are still opening after winter. December–March: extreme cold (-20°C) but the famous Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar River.
