Five days that combine the essential Leh experience with the extraordinary Pangong Tso — the 134 km saltwater lake at 4,350m that turns from turquoise to emerald to deep sapphire as the light shifts across the day. Pangong is perhaps the most visually stunning single location in all of Ladakh.
Two days in Leh cover the palace, the Shanti Stupa, and the remarkable Indus Valley monasteries — Thiksey, Hemis, and Shey. The Khardung La excursion (5,359m, one of the world's highest motorable passes) fills Day 3. Then the road south via Chang La Pass (5,360m) to Pangong Tso for an overnight on the lakeshore — arriving in the afternoon, watching the colour of the lake shift through the evening hours, and waking to the extraordinary dawn light on the water before driving back.
Pangong Tso (tso means 'lake' in Tibetan) has been famous internationally since its appearance in the 2009 Bollywood film '3 Idiots'. It straddles the India–China LAC; approximately 45 km of the lake is in India and 90 km in China. The camping and guesthouses on the Indian shore (at Spangmik, Man, and Merak villages) offer an overnight experience unlike anywhere else in India.

Welcome! Transfer to your hotel. Mandatory rest day — drink water, eat light, avoid exertion. Gentle afternoon stroll in Leh Bazaar only if feeling well. Early dinner and bed.
Full day of Leh sightseeing. Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa in the morning. Afternoon: Shey Palace (giant copper-gilt Buddha), Thiksey Monastery (12-storey, 49-ft Maitreya), and Hemis Monastery (Ladakh's largest). Sangam confluence at Nimmu (Indus + Zanskar rivers meeting in visible colour contrast).
Drive to Khardung La (38 km, ~2 hrs) — 5,359m, one of the world's highest motorable passes. Brief descent into the upper Nubra Valley for views before returning to Leh. Afternoon: Magnetic Hill optical illusion and Pathar Sahib Gurudwara. Return Leh for dinner.
Drive from Leh to Pangong Tso (155 km, ~4.5 hrs) via Chang La (5,360m, another world-class high pass). The road descends through the Changthang plateau — a vast high-altitude grassland where Changpa nomads graze their Pashmina goats and yaks. Arrive Pangong Tso in the early afternoon. The lake's colour is extraordinary at all times — shifting from turquoise near the shore to deep sapphire in the centre, turning gold and rose at sunset. Walk along the shore, watch the light change, and dine at your lakeshore camp or guesthouse.
The overnight at Pangong (at 4,350m) in a tent or basic guesthouse, with the stars multiplied by the absence of any light pollution and the complete silence of the Changthang, is one of the great overnight experiences in India.
Wake before dawn for the most extraordinary light of the tour — Pangong Tso at first light turns rose-gold before settling into its daytime turquoise. After breakfast, drive back to Leh (155 km, ~4 hrs) in time for your departure flight. Transfer to Leh Airport. Tour concludes.

The main accommodation clusters on the Indian shore are at Spangmik (the closest village, 4 km from the border checkpoint), Man, and Merak villages. Options range from basic fixed-tent camps to slightly more comfortable permanent camp structures with attached bathrooms. Genuine luxury is not available at Pangong — this is part of the experience. The tents are warm with good sleeping bags; the night sky from 4,350m with no light pollution is worth any comfort sacrifice. We select the best-rated camp or guesthouse available at the time of your booking.
The fastest way is by air — Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport has daily flights from Delhi (1h 10m), Srinagar, Jammu, Chandigarh, and Manali. Book early as seats fill quickly June–September. The alternative is the Srinagar–Leh or Manali–Leh highway (both 2 days of mountain driving, open June–October) — extraordinary road journeys but time-consuming.
Yes — Leh is at 3,524m and some destinations reach 5,300m+. We strongly recommend: arrive by flight, rest on Day 1 (no strenuous activity), drink 3–4 litres of water daily, avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours, and consult your doctor about Diamox (acetazolamide) before travel. Do not attempt this tour if you have cardiac or severe respiratory conditions. Our drivers carry basic medical supplies and know the signs of AMS.
Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Turtuk, and Dah-Hanu. Foreign nationals require Protected Area Permits (PAP) for the same areas plus additional restrictions in some zones. We arrange all permits as part of your booking — this is handled by our Leh office and is included in the tour price.
June–September is the main tourist season — roads open, maximum sunshine, Pangong and Nubra accessible. July–August is peak season (book far in advance). October brings dramatic colours and fewer crowds but some mountain passes may close. May is beautiful but some roads are still opening after winter. December–March: extreme cold (-20°C) but the famous Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar River.
