Shimla — the summer capital of British India at 2,206m in the Shivalik Himalaya — remains the most characterful hill station in north India. Three nights give you enough time to absorb its extraordinary blend of Victorian gothic architecture, Himalayan cedar forests, and the culture of a town that governed the subcontinent for six months of every year from the 1860s onwards.
The Kalka–Shimla Railway (UNESCO World Heritage, 1903) is one of India's most celebrated mountain railways — 96 km of narrow gauge track climbing from 656m to 2,076m through 102 tunnels and over 800 bridges, following the mountain ridges with views of the Shivalik plains below and the snow-capped Himalaya above. The journey takes 5.5 hours and is one of the great scenic train rides in Asia.
Shimla's highlights are varied and deeply interesting: the Viceregal Lodge (now Rashtrapati Niwas) — a magnificent Scottish baronial mansion that served as the summer residence of the Viceroy of India and the site of the Shimla Conferences that shaped the partition of the subcontinent. Jakhu Hill (2,455m) with its ancient Hanuman temple and colony of rhesus monkeys. The Mall Road promenade — the social heart of British India's hill life, still lined with heritage buildings, bookshops, and coffee houses. And Kufri (2,622m) — a snow point 16 km from Shimla offering snow activities in winter and Himalayan views year-round.

Depart Delhi early morning by car or train to Kalka (270 km, ~4.5 hrs from Delhi). Board the UNESCO Kalka–Shimla Heritage Railway toy train for the most scenic leg of the journey — 96 km through 102 tunnels and over 800 bridges, climbing 1,420 metres in 5.5 hours. The views of the Shivalik hills and, on clear days, the snow-capped Himalayan peaks are extraordinary. Arrive Shimla by early evening. Check in to your heritage hotel. Evening: first walk along the Mall Road — the ridge-top promenade of Victorian gothic buildings, the Gaiety Theatre, and the Christ Church lit against the darkening sky.
Full day in Shimla. Morning: the Viceregal Lodge (Rashtrapati Niwas) — a magnificent 1888 Scottish baronial mansion set in 330 acres of deodar cedar forest. This was the official summer residence of every Viceroy from Lord Dufferin (1888) to Lord Mountbatten, and the site of the 1945 Shimla Conference and the 1972 Simla Agreement. The interiors are open for guided tours — the Ballroom, the Library, and the state rooms are extraordinary. Jakhu Hill (2,455m, 30-minute walk or ropeway from the Ridge) — the ancient Hanuman temple, a colony of bold rhesus monkeys, and panoramic 360° views of the Himalayan range and the Shivalik plains.
Afternoon drive to Kufri (16 km, 2,622m) — a popular snow point above Shimla where activities include sledging (November–March), yak rides, and a small Himalayan wildlife sanctuary. Views across the Himalayan range from Kufri on clear days are exceptional.
A more relaxed day exploring Shimla's surroundings. Naldehra (22 km from Shimla) — a beautiful deodar cedar forest at 2,044m, home to India's oldest golf course (1905, designed during Lord Curzon's viceroyalty). The golf course winds through the forest with views of Himalayan peaks — even non-golfers enjoy a walk through this setting. Shali Tibba viewpoint (nearest high ridge to Shimla) for panoramic mountain views.
Tattapani (50 km, optional) — a riverside hot spring resort on the banks of the Sutlej River, where sulphur springs bubble up beside the water and bathers float in natural warm pools. Return to Shimla for an afternoon on the Mall — the Gaiety Theatre (1887, one of the finest Victorian theatres in India, still hosting performances), the Shimla bookshops (some of the finest second-hand bookstalls in India), and the toy stalls of the Lower Bazaar.
Morning checkout and drive from Shimla to Chandigarh (115 km, ~3 hrs). Chandigarh is one of the great 20th-century planned cities — designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Jane Drew in the early 1950s as the new capital of Punjab after Partition. The Capitol Complex (UNESCO World Heritage, 2016) — the Assembly, High Court, and Secretariat — is Le Corbusier at his most monumental. Nek Chand's Rock Garden (40 acres, begun secretly in 1957, now a major attraction) — an extraordinary outdoor sculpture garden created entirely from recycled industrial and urban waste, featuring thousands of figures, arches, and waterfalls.
Sukhna Lake (a pleasant lakeside walk) and Rose Garden (Asia's largest rose garden). Drive back to Delhi (250 km, ~4.5 hrs). Tour concludes.

The building is open to visitors for guided tours of the public rooms — the Ballroom, the Library, and the state apartments. The 5.5-hour journey from Kalka to Shimla climbs 1,420 metres through 102 tunnels and over 800 bridges on a track only 762mm wide. The scenery — Shivalik hills below and Himalayan peaks above — is extraordinary. Book first-class (the Shivalik Deluxe Express) for the best seats and a dining car. If you are very short on time, the Heritage Rail Museum at Shimla station displays original locomotives and rolling stock from the line's history.
March–June is ideal — apple blossom, spring flowers, comfortable temperatures (15–25°C in Shimla, cooler at Manali). September–November: post-monsoon clarity, crisp air, and golden apple harvest. December–February: heavy snow in Manali and Rohtang — perfect for winter sports. Avoid July–August (monsoon): roads can be disrupted and views are often obscured by cloud. Shimla is pleasant year-round; Manali and Rohtang are best avoided in monsoon.

The most convenient options from Delhi: by AC Volvo bus (8–10 hrs overnight to Shimla or Manali), by private vehicle (the most comfortable option, included in our tours), or by train to Kalka followed by the UNESCO Heritage Toy Train to Shimla (5.5 hrs, a wonderful experience). Rohtang Pass (3,978m) is typically open May–November. It closes due to snowfall (usually November) and doesn't reopen until May/June. It also closes on Tuesdays for environmental reasons, and the Himachal Pradesh government limits the number of vehicles per day (permits required — we arrange these). An alternative when Rohtang is closed is the Atal Tunnel (completed 2020) which connects Manali to the Lahaul valley year-round at any weather.
