The Sundarbans is the world's largest tidal mangrove forest, spread across the delta where the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers meet the Bay of Bengal — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, since 1973, one of the founding reserves of Project Tiger. Unlike any other tiger reserve in India, there are no jeep safaris here at all — the entire park is explored exclusively by boat, weaving through narrow tidal creeks between walls of mangrove.
The Royal Bengal Tiger that calls this delta home is a genuinely different animal from its counterparts elsewhere in India — a strong swimmer, adapted to a salt-water mangrove environment found nowhere else on earth. Sightings are rare and never guaranteed, but the forest itself, alive with spotted deer, saltwater crocodiles, Irrawaddy dolphins, and an exceptional variety of birdlife, rewards the trip regardless.
This 3-day itinerary departs from Kolkata via Godkhali, the main gateway to the reserve, with two full nights aboard a launch or at a riverside eco-resort — enough time for both a sunrise and a late-afternoon safari session, when wildlife activity is at its highest.

Namaste! Welcome to West Bengal. Early morning, depart Kolkata by road for Godkhali (approximately 90 km, ~2.5 hours), the main gateway to the Sundarbans. On arrival, board your boat and cruise through the mangrove-lined waterways to your launch or eco-resort accommodation within the reserve. After lunch, set out on an afternoon creek cruise, spotting waterbirds, spotted deer along the banks, and — if you're fortunate — early signs of tiger activity.
An early sunrise boat safari, when the forest is at its most active — the best window for a tiger sighting, though never guaranteed. Visit Sajnekhali Watchtower and its Interpretation Centre for an introduction to the delta's unique ecosystem, followed by Sudhanyakhali Watchtower, known for particularly frequent wildlife sightings. In the afternoon, walk the Dobanki Canopy Walk, an elevated walkway through the mangrove canopy offering a completely different vantage point over the forest, before a final late-afternoon cruise back toward your accommodation.
A final early-morning boat cruise for one last chance at spotting wildlife along the creeks, before checking out. Board the boat back to Godkhali, then drive back to Kolkata (approximately 90 km, ~2.5 hours), arriving by early afternoon. Tour concludes.
