Two Distinct Himalayan Wellness Traditions, One Continuous Journey
A genuinely complementary pairing of two of India's most significant wellness destinations — Rishikesh, the self-proclaimed Yoga Capital of the World, and Dharamsala's McLeod Ganj, home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile since 1959, and one of the world's most accessible centres of Tibetan Buddhist meditation practice.
Four nights in Rishikesh establish a genuine daily yoga and pranayama rhythm on the banks of the Ganges, with the nightly Ganga Aarti as a recurring, grounding ritual. From there, the journey climbs into the Himalayan foothills to Dharamsala, where the practice shifts from physical yoga toward Tibetan Buddhist meditation — guided sessions, monastery visits, and the genuinely different, quieter energy of a town built around exile, resilience, and contemplative practice.
This trail suits travellers wanting a fuller wellness journey than a single-location retreat — moving from the Ganges' devotional energy to the Dhauladhar mountains' more introspective, meditative pace, without ever feeling rushed between the two.
What makes this journey special
Your journey, unfolded
Namaste! Welcome to Uttarakhand. On arrival at Dehradun Airport, meet our representative and drive to Rishikesh (approximately 35 km, ~1 hour). On arrival, check in to your ashram-style accommodation on the banks of the Ganges. In the evening, attend the Ganga Aarti at the riverside ghats.
Begin the daily yoga rhythm — a morning session followed by breakfast, then an afternoon walk across the Lakshman Jhula suspension bridge to explore Tapovan's temples and riverside cafés. A second yoga and pranayama session follows in the late afternoon, before the evening Ganga Aarti.
Morning yoga followed by a foundational meditation session. In the afternoon, cross the Ram Jhula suspension bridge and explore the area associated with the Beatles' 1968 stay near the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram.
A final full day of Rishikesh practice — morning and evening yoga sessions, with free time to enjoy the riverside pace, browse local bookshops, or simply rest ahead of tomorrow's journey into the mountains.
After breakfast, check out and drive to Dharamsala (approximately 230 km, ~7-8 hours), climbing into the Himalayan foothills of the Dhauladhar range. On arrival at McLeod Ganj, check in to your retreat accommodation, with the evening free to rest after the journey.
Visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex, the Dalai Lama's temple and residence, and the spiritual heart of the Tibetan exile community since 1959. Attend a guided Tibetan Buddhist meditation session with an experienced teacher, introducing foundational technique rooted in this specific tradition. In the afternoon, walk the Lingkhor kora, the circumambulation path around the temple complex, past prayer wheels and flags with sweeping Dhauladhar mountain views.
A final morning meditation session before checking out. Transfer to Kangra Airport (Gaggal, approximately 15 km, ~30 minutes) for your departure flight. Tour concludes.

Your questions, answered
Genuinely different in both technique and philosophical grounding — Rishikesh's yoga tradition centres on physical postures (asana), breathing (pranayama), and Hindu/Vedantic philosophy, while Dharamsala's Tibetan Buddhist meditation focuses on mindfulness and contemplative mental training within a distinct Buddhist framework. Many travellers find the contrast itself valuable — this itinerary is built specifically to let you experience both traditions properly rather than blending them into one.
Kangra Airport (Gaggal) has limited direct flight connections compared to Delhi. If your onward travel needs better connectivity, we can instead arrange the return leg via a scenic drive back to Delhi (approximately 470 km, ~10-11 hours) — let us know your preference when booking.
