Where the Ganges Meets the Himalaya — and Yoga Meets Its Origins

Rishikesh has earned its reputation as the Yoga Capital of the World the hard way — through genuine, continuous ashram tradition rather than marketing. Set where the Ganges emerges from the Himalaya onto the plains, the town has drawn yoga practitioners and spiritual seekers for well over a century, and each March hosts the International Yoga Festival at Parmarth Niketan Ashram, drawing over 1,500 participants from more than 80 countries.

This 5-day escape is built around an ashram-style daily rhythm — morning and evening yoga sessions, pranayama (breathing practice), meditation, and the genuinely moving experience of the nightly Ganga Aarti at the riverside ghats, where hundreds gather each evening as lamps are floated on the water to the sound of chanting and bells.

Rishikesh offers a real range of practice styles — Hatha, Iyengar, Kundalini, and Ashtanga among them — and this itinerary keeps the schedule genuinely unhurried, leaving room for the Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula suspension bridges, riverside cafés, and simply sitting by the Ganges.

What makes this journey special

1.Stay in ashram-style accommodation on the banks of the sacred Ganges.
2.Practise twice-daily yoga sessions spanning Hatha, Iyengar, and pranayama technique.
3.Attend the nightly Ganga Aarti — a genuinely moving riverside lamp and chanting ceremony.
4.Learn meditation technique from experienced instructors in a tradition dating back generations.
5.Cross the Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula suspension bridges over the Ganges.
6.Visit ashrams and temples along the river, including the area associated with the Beatles' 1968 stay.
7.Experience Rishikesh's genuinely unhurried, contemplative pace — no sightseeing rush, just practice and rest.

Your questions, answered

No — sessions are designed to suit complete beginners as well as more experienced practitioners, with instructors offering modifications throughout. Rishikesh's ashram tradition has welcomed newcomers for generations; this is very much an accessible introduction, not an advanced-only retreat.

No — Rishikesh is a strictly vegetarian town, and alcohol is not sold within municipal limits, in keeping with its status as a centre of yoga and spiritual practice. This is worth knowing in advance, though most visitors find it fits naturally with the retreat's overall pace and purpose.

Yes — see our Rishikesh & Dharamsala Himalayan Wellness Trail, which extends this exact Rishikesh stay with several days at McLeod Ganj, the seat of the Dalai Lama and Tibetan government-in-exile.
