The journey begins in Chennai, the gateway to the Tamil South — a city whose Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, the magnificent Parthasarathy Temple, and the ancient sites of Mahabalipuram (a day-trip option) offer rich Dravidian heritage before the pilgrimage proper begins.
Tirupati town itself holds several important shrines: Kapila Teertham (a sacred waterfall dedicated to Lord Shiva), the Govindarajaswami Temple (the largest temple in the town), and Chandragiri Fort — a 17th-century hilltop fortress with extraordinary views over the Deccan plateau. The ascent to Tirumala Hill (the temple sits at 853 metres) by road through seven hills is itself a profound experience, with the forest giving way suddenly to the vast temple complex.

Welcome to South India! Your driver meets you at Chennai (Madras) Airport or Central Railway Station. Begin with the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore — one of the finest examples of Dravidian architecture in Tamil Nadu, with its soaring 37-metre gopuram (gateway tower) covered in thousands of painted stucco sculptures. The temple tank and the surrounding streets of Mylapore, with their silk shops and flower markets, are quintessential Chennai.
Drive along Marina Beach — 13 km of golden sand, the world's second longest urban beach. The statues of nationalist leaders, the lighthouse, and the late-evening crowds give it an extraordinary atmosphere. Optional evening visit to the Parthasarathy Temple (one of the oldest Vaishnava temples in the city) before dinner.
Early morning drive south from Chennai to Tirupati (about 2.5 hours). Visit Chandragiri Fort — a dramatic hilltop fortification built in the 11th century and later a stronghold of the Vijayanagara Empire. The Raja Mahal palace within the fort houses a small but fascinating museum; the views over the surrounding plains are excellent.
Continue to Tirupati town: Kapila Teertham — a sacred waterfall where the Swami Pushkarini stream emerges from the Tirumala Hills beside an ancient Shiva temple, considered one of the eight swayambhu (self-manifested) lingas of Andhra Pradesh. The Sri Govindarajaswami Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture, is one of the most important Vaishnava shrines in the Telugu-speaking world. Evening: registration for tomorrow's Tirumala Hill darshan.
The most sacred day of the pilgrimage. Drive up the Tirumala Ghat Road — seven winding hills through dense forest — to Tirumala at 853 metres. The approach to the Srivari Temple is through a series of Rajagopurams (towering gateway spires) and pilgrim facilities. The darshan of the main deity — Lord Venkateswara Swamy (Balaji), adorned in gold and jewels — is a profoundly moving experience that draws devotees from every corner of India and the world.
After darshan, visit the Papavinasam (Akasa Ganga) waterfall on the hill, and the Sri Varaha Swami Temple — the oldest shrine on Tirumala. Descend to Tirupati for lunch before driving back to Chennai for your onward journey. The tour concludes at Chennai Airport or Railway Station.

The TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams) offers several types of darshan: Free Darshan (Sarva Darshan — queuing time can be 6–20+ hours), Special Entry Darshan (Rupees 300 per person, 2–4 hours wait), and various Seva (ritual service) options that allow more intimate access to the deity. We strongly recommend booking Special Entry Darshan tickets online well in advance at tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in. Our team will guide you through the booking process.
Non-Hindus are permitted in most areas of Tirumala but are required to sign a declaration of faith in the Lord Venkateswara before entering the inner temple areas. The experience is open and welcoming to all sincere visitors, regardless of background. The atmosphere of concentrated devotion is extraordinary and moving for people of any faith. Dress modestly (traditional Indian attire is preferred but not mandatory).

October to March is ideal across all South India destinations — cooler temperatures, clear skies, and the post-monsoon lush landscape. The Tamil Nadu temple circuit and Tirupati are best avoided during peak festival periods (unless you wish to participate in the festivals themselves) as crowds are very heavy. Ooty and Kodaikanal are pleasant almost year-round; June–September brings mist and mild monsoon rains to the Nilgiris.
