The journey opens in Chennai with the magnificent Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore and Marina Beach, then moves south along the Coromandel Coast to Mahabalipuram — a 7th-century Pallava port city whose Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas (five monolithic chariot temples), and rock-cut cave temples constitute one of the greatest concentrations of early Dravidian architecture in the world.
The ancient silk-weaving city of Kanchipuram — one of the seven sacred Hindu cities of India — has been a major temple town since the 2nd century CE. Over a hundred temples remain active in this compact city, the most celebrated being the Ekambareswarar Temple (whose Shiva lingam is a living mango tree over 3,000 years old), the Kailasanatha Temple (the finest example of early Pallava architecture, dating to 700 CE), and the Varadharaja Perumal Temple.
The pilgrimage culminates at Tirumala — the most sacred Vaishnava shrine in the world, perched at 853 metres in the Tirumala Hills. The Venkateswara Temple's golden gopuram, the sacred darshan, and the extraordinary atmosphere of collective devotion make this a spiritual experience unlike any other in India.

Welcome to South India! Transfer from Chennai Airport. Begin with the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore — a 16th-century Dravidian masterpiece with a 37-metre gopuram covered in thousands of painted stucco figures. The surrounding streets of Mylapore, with their silk shops, flower garland vendors, and coffee houses, are quintessential Chennai. Drive along the 13-km Marina Beach promenade before dinner.
Drive south along the East Coast Road to Mahabalipuram (60 km, 1.5 hrs) — a 7th-century Pallava port city that produced some of the most extraordinary stone sculpture and temple architecture in Indian history. The Shore Temple — the earliest structural stone temple in South India, standing on a promontory over the Bay of Bengal since 700 CE — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of profound beauty. The five Pancha Rathas are five separate monolithic temples carved from single granite outcrops in the shape of chariots, each dedicated to one of the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata.
The Descent of the Ganges (also called Arjuna's Penance) is one of the world's largest bas-relief rock carvings — a 27×9 metre mythological landscape carved on two enormous boulders, showing the descent of the sacred Ganges from heaven. En route back to Chennai, stop at Kanchipuram to visit the Kailasanatha Temple (700 CE, early Pallava) and Ekambareswarar Temple.
Morning: further exploration of Kanchipuram — the Varadharaja Perumal Temple (one of the 108 Divya Desams, or sacred Vishnu temples, of India; its 100-pillared mandapam is extraordinary) and the Kamakshi Amman Temple (the most important Shakti temple in Tamil Nadu — Goddess Kamakshi holds court here over the entire Kanchi region). Stop at a traditional Kanchipuram silk weaving establishment — these handloom silks, with their gold zari borders and contrasting pallav, have been woven here for over 400 years.
Drive south to Tirupati (2.5 hours). Evening: Chandragiri Fort and Kapila Teertham waterfall.
Early morning ascent to Tirumala Hills (853m) for darshan at the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple — the most visited religious site on earth, receiving over 50,000 devotees daily. The golden gopurams, the sacred queue, the brief but profound moment before the main deity, and the prasadam (sacred food offering) constitute one of the most moving spiritual experiences in South India. After darshan, descend to Tirupati for lunch, then drive back to Chennai for your onward departure.

Yes, especially for two reasons: the Shore Temple at dawn — before tour buses arrive — is extraordinary, and the evening light on the Pancha Rathas and the bas-relief carvings is the best time to appreciate the sculpture. The beaches of Mahabalipuram are also excellent for swimming in the morning. We recommend an overnight at one of the small boutique resorts near the Shore Temple, which give you early and late access to this remarkable site.
Kanchipuram is equally famous for its traditional Kanchipuram silk sarees — among the most prized textiles in India, worn by brides across South Asia. The sarees are handwoven from mulberry silk with distinctive gold zari (metallic thread) borders and contrasting pallav (end piece). Many weaving families still operate traditional pit looms in their homes, and a visit to a weaving establishment is fascinating even for those who don't purchase.

October to March is ideal across all South India destinations — cooler temperatures, clear skies, and the post-monsoon lush landscape. The Tamil Nadu temple circuit and Tirupati are best avoided during peak festival periods (unless you wish to participate in the festivals themselves) as crowds are very heavy. Ooty and Kodaikanal are pleasant almost year-round; June–September brings mist and mild monsoon rains to the Nilgiris.
