Welcome to South India! Transfer from Bangalore Airport. Visit Lalbagh Botanical Garden — 240 acres with a Victorian glasshouse modelled on London's Crystal Palace. Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace (1784) — a fine two-storey teak structure, now a museum of the Tiger of Mysore. Drive past the Vidhana Soudha — Karnataka's magnificent neo-Dravidian legislature, floodlit at night. Evening: Bangalore's vibrant Church Street or MG Road dining scene.
Drive southwest to Mysore (145 km, 3 hrs). Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas) — completed 1912 in an extraordinary fusion of Indo-Saracenic, Dravidian, Rajput, and Roman styles; the Durbar Hall's stained glass ceiling and peacock mosaic floor are magnificent. Chamundi Hills for the Sri Chamundeshwari Temple and the giant 17th-century Nandi sculpture. Evening: Devaraja Market — jasmine, incense, silk, and Mysore sandal soap in a 19th-century covered market.
Jaganmohan Art Gallery — royal paintings, ivory carvings, and Raja Ravi Varma works. Mysore Silk Factory — guided tour of India's finest pure silk fabric production, from raw fibre to finished saree. Brindavan Gardens (19 km, Krishnarajasagar Dam) — 60 terraced acres; evening Musical Fountain show in colour. If visiting on a Sunday, return to the Mysore Palace at 7 PM for the 97,000-bulb illumination.
Drive south (125 km, 4 hrs) through Bandipur National Park — elephants, gaur, and deer commonly sighted along the forest road. Climb the dramatic Ooty ghat road (36 hairpin bends) into the Nilgiri Mountains. Arrive Ooty at 2,240m — the temperature drops and the air fills with eucalyptus. Evening: stroll through Ooty town's colonial-era streets.
Full morning in Ooty: the Botanical Garden (22 hectares, established 1848; fossilised tree 20 million years old). Ooty Lake for a morning rowing boat in the mist. Doddabetta Peak (2,637m, highest Nilgiri point) for views across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Descend to Coimbatore Airport (90 km, 2.5 hrs) for your departure, or optionally take the UNESCO Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train down from Ooty to Mettupalayam.

The palace is beautiful any time, but Sunday evenings are special — all 97,000 bulbs are switched on from 7–7:45 PM (arrive by 6 PM for the best positions outside the palace). During Dasara festival (September/October) the Maharaja's elephant procession and palace illumination make Mysore one of India's most spectacular festival destinations.
Yes — highly recommended if time allows. The 46 km UNESCO World Heritage journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty takes 3.5–4.5 hours through 16 tunnels, mountain viaducts, and dense shola forest.
