Living Temples, a City of a Thousand Shrines & UNESCO Rock-Cut Monuments by the Sea

A 5-day circuit linking three of South India's most significant temple destinations — Tirupati's Tirumala Venkateshwara Temple, one of the most visited religious sites on earth; Kanchipuram, revered as one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities; and Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its 7th-8th century Pallava-era rock-cut temples and sculpture.

The tour opens with the drive from Chennai to Tirupati (approximately 150 km, ~3 hours), with two full nights allowing a properly paced visit — darshan at the Tirumala Venkateshwara Temple to view its revered 8-foot idol of Lord Venkateshwara, followed by a tour of the town's other significant shrines: Sri Kalahasti, Govindarajaswami, Kondandarama, Parashurameshwara, and the ISKCON Temple.

From Tirupati, the route continues to Mahabalipuram (approximately 200 km, ~4 hours), stopping en route at Kanchipuram — one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities and a major centre of silk weaving, with its own remarkable temple architecture at Kamakshi Amman Temple, Ekambareswarar Temple, Kailasanatha Temple, and Varadharaja Perumal Temple.

Mahabalipuram itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases the Pallava dynasty's 7th-8th century rock-cut architecture at its finest — the Shore Temple, the Pancha Rathas (five monolithic 'chariot' shrines), and the famous Arjuna's Penance relief — before the tour concludes with a half-day Chennai city tour and departure.

Your questions, answered

October to March offers the most comfortable temperatures (22–30°C) for temple darshan and outdoor sightseeing at Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram. April–June is hot and humid (up to 38°C+); the northeast monsoon (October–December) brings periodic heavy rain to the Tamil Nadu coast, though Tirupati itself, further inland, is less affected.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) operates several darshan categories — the free Sarva Darshan queue can take anywhere from 3 to 12+ hours depending on the day and season, while the paid Special Entry Darshan (₹300, subject to availability) significantly reduces waiting time to typically 2-4 hours. We can assist with booking Special Entry Darshan slots in advance, which we strongly recommend given the temple's enormous daily pilgrim volume (50,000+ on a typical day).

Absolutely. Every Discover India tour is fully private and built around your preferences. We can adjust the duration, add Sri Kalahasti or Tiruchanur, or upgrade hotel categories. Submit an enquiry and our specialists will tailor it for you at no obligation.

October to March offers the most comfortable temperatures (15–28°C) for the ghats, boat rides, and temple queues. April–June is hot on the Gangetic plain (up to 42°C); the monsoon (July–September) raises the Ganges considerably, which can affect ghat access in both cities.

The new Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir draws very large crowds, particularly on weekends and during festivals such as Ram Navami and Diwali. We schedule darshan with queue time built into the itinerary; carrying a valid photo ID is recommended, as security screening is in place at the main temple complex.
