Four Sacred Shrines, One Continuous Himalayan Pilgrimage Through the Heart of Dev Bhoomi
The Chardham Yatra — often called the Chota Char Dham to distinguish it from the four pan-India Dhams — is one of Hinduism's most revered pilgrimage circuits, leading devotees to four sacred shrines nestled deep in the Garhwal Himalaya: Yamunotri, source of the Yamuna River; Gangotri, source of the Ganges; Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva; and Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Tradition holds that the Yatra should be undertaken in a clockwise direction, beginning at the westernmost shrine and ending at the easternmost — Yamunotri first, then Gangotri, Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath — a sequence this itinerary follows precisely, covering a total road and trekking distance of approximately 1,600 km from Haridwar and back.
The journey opens with the drive to Barkot, the base for the 6 km trek to Yamunotri's hot springs and temple, before continuing to Uttarkashi — known as 'the Kashi of the North' — for the drive to Gangotri, where the Ganges first emerges from the Himalaya in physical form. From here, the route turns toward Guptkashi and the demanding 16 km trek to Kedarnath, set at 3,583m amid some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in India.
The Yatra's final leg brings Badrinath — reached by road via Joshimath, with the option to visit nearby Mana, India's last village before the Tibetan border — before the long drive back through Rudraprayag and Rishikesh to Haridwar, completing a pilgrimage that, according to Hindu belief, has the power to cleanse the soul and grant moksha.

Meet our representative at Haridwar and begin the drive to Barkot (approximately 215 km, ~8 hours), the base town for the Yamunotri leg of the Yatra, passing through Dehradun, Mussoorie's outskirts, and the winding mountain roads of the lower Garhwal Himalaya. On arrival, check in to your hotel.
Early morning, drive from Barkot to Janki Chatti (approximately 36-45 km), the trailhead for Yamunotri. From here, trek approximately 6 km (one way) to the Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna — pony and palanquin (doli) options are available for those preferring not to walk. At the shrine, bathe in the hot springs of Surya Kund, where pilgrims traditionally cook rice wrapped in cloth as prasad, and seek darshan of the Goddess. Return to Janki Chatti and drive back to Barkot for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, check out and drive to Uttarkashi (approximately 100 km, ~4 hours), with a journey break en route at Brahmkhal and Dharasu Band. Uttarkashi, literally meaning 'Kashi of the North', is the principal town on the Gangotri leg of the Yatra. On arrival, settle in and visit the Vishwanath Temple in the evening.
Early breakfast, then proceed to Gangotri, with a journey break at Gangnani's hot water springs en route. Gangotri Temple, set on the banks of the Bhagirathi River amid towering Himalayan peaks, marks the place where the Ganges is believed to have first descended to earth (the true glacial source, Gaumukh, lies a further trek of approximately 18 km beyond the temple, for those wishing to extend the visit). Seek darshan and take a holy dip in the icy waters. Return to Uttarkashi for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, check out and drive to Guptkashi, the base town for the Kedarnath leg of the Yatra (approximately 235 km, ~9 hours), passing through Rudraprayag, where the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers meet. On arrival, check in to your hotel and rest ahead of tomorrow's trek.
Early morning, drive from Guptkashi to Sonprayag/Gaurikund (approximately 30-32 km), the trailhead for Kedarnath. From here, trek 16 km to Kedarnath (3,583m) — pony, palanquin, and helicopter options are also available for those preferring not to walk the full distance, which takes approximately 6-7 hours on foot. On arrival, check in to your guesthouse and attend the evening Aarti at the temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
Early morning darshan at the Kedarnath Temple. Afterward, trek back down to Gaurikund (16 km) and drive to Guptkashi. On arrival, check in to your hotel for a well-earned rest after two demanding trekking days.
After breakfast, check out and drive to Badrinath (approximately 190 km, ~8 hours), passing through Joshimath, the winter seat of the Badrinath deity and gateway to Auli and the Valley of Flowers. On arrival in Badrinath, check in to your hotel and visit the temple for an evening darshan.
A full day at Badrinath. Morning darshan at the Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and one of the most significant Vaishnavite pilgrimage sites in India. Bathe in the Tapt Kund hot springs beside the temple. Visit Mana Village, just 3 km away — the last Indian settlement before the Tibetan border, with the legendary Vyas Cave and Bhim Pul rock bridge. Visit the Narsingh Temple and Shankaracharya Math in Badrinath town. Overnight stay in Badrinath.
After breakfast, check out and drive back toward Rudraprayag (approximately 160 km, ~7 hours), retracing the route via Joshimath and the sacred river confluences of Vishnuprayag and Nandprayag. On arrival, check in to your hotel for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, check out and drive to Rishikesh or Haridwar (approximately 140-165 km, ~6 hours), passing Devprayag, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet to form the Ganges proper. On arrival, check in to your hotel. In the evening, attend the Ganga Aarti — at Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh, or Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar — a fitting, reflective close to the pilgrimage.
A relaxed final morning — perhaps a last visit to the ghats, or some time at leisure reflecting on the completed Yatra. Check out and transfer to Dehradun Airport or Haridwar railway station for your onward journey. Tour concludes.

The shrines open only between approximately late April/early May (Akshaya Tritiya) and late October/early November (around Diwali), when the deities are ceremonially moved to their winter seats and the high-altitude routes become snowbound. Within this window, May-June and September-October offer the most stable weather; July-August (monsoon) brings a real risk of landslides on the mountain roads, particularly on the Gangotri and Kedarnath stretches.
