A Jyotirlinga, a 'City of Joy' & the Narmada's Most Beautiful Ghats
A fuller, six-day version of Madhya Pradesh's Narmada heritage circuit, adding Mandu — the extraordinary 'City of Joy' — to the Ujjain-Maheshwar-Omkareshwar route, with two full nights in Ujjain to properly explore the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga at both a busy midday and the renowned pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti.
From Ujjain, the route continues to Mandu, a deserted hilltop city of palaces, tombs, and mosques built around the legendary love story of Prince Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati — the Jahaz Mahal ('Ship Palace') appears to float above its own reflection, and Hoshang Shah's Tomb is credited as an architectural inspiration for the Taj Mahal itself.
The circuit continues to Maheshwar for Rani Ahilyabai Holkar's riverside fort and ghats, and Omkareshwar's Om-shaped island temple, before returning to Indore — Madhya Pradesh's largest city and its unofficial food capital — for departure.
What makes this journey special
Your journey, unfolded
Namaste! Welcome to Madhya Pradesh. On arrival at Indore Airport, meet our representative and drive to Ujjain (approximately 55 km, ~1 hour). On arrival, check in to your hotel. In the afternoon, visit Ram Ghat on the banks of the Shipra River, Kal Bhairav Temple, and Harsiddhi Temple, one of the 18 Shakti Peethas.
An early start for those wishing to attend the renowned Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar Temple (4:00-6:00 AM), requiring advance online booking, which we can assist with. Later in the morning, visit the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga for regular darshan — uniquely south-facing among all twelve Jyotirlingas. Spend the rest of the day exploring Ujjain's other significant temples and the Vedh Shala (ancient observatory).
After breakfast, check out and drive to Mandu (approximately 150 km, ~3.5 hours) — a deserted hilltop city once known as the 'City of Joy'. On arrival, check in to your hotel. In the afternoon, visit the Jahaz Mahal ('Ship Palace'), which appears to float above its own reflection between two artificial lakes, and Hindola Mahal ('Swing Palace'). In the evening, visit Sunset Point for panoramic views over the Malwa plateau.
After breakfast, visit Rani Roopmati's Pavilion, built so the legendary queen could view the Narmada River from her hilltop retreat, and Baz Bahadur's Palace, commemorating the couple's celebrated love story. Visit Hoshang Shah's Tomb — India's oldest marble structure, credited as an architectural inspiration for the Taj Mahal — and the adjoining Jami Masjid. After lunch, check out and drive to Maheshwar (approximately 65 km, ~1.5 hours). On arrival, check in to your hotel, with the evening free to enjoy the Narmada Ghat near Maheshwar Fort.
After breakfast, explore Maheshwar's Ahilya Fort, the 18th-century riverside stronghold built by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, and take a boat ride on the Narmada. Browse the Maheshwari saree weaving centres, a handloom tradition unbroken since the 5th century. Check out and drive to Omkareshwar (approximately 80 km, ~2 hours) en route to Indore. Visit the Omkareshwar Temple, set on an island shaped like the sacred Om symbol, and the adjoining Mamleshwar Temple. Continue the drive to Indore (approximately 80 km further, ~2 hours). On arrival, check in to your hotel.
A relaxed final morning in Indore — visit Rajwada Palace, the historic seven-storey Holkar residence, and browse Sarafa Bazaar, Indore's famous night food street (a daytime visit, as it's best known for its evening food stalls). Check out and transfer to Indore Airport for your onward flight. Tour concludes.

Your questions, answered
Yes, if you have the extra time — Mandu is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Madhya Pradesh, a deserted hilltop city of palaces and tombs with a famous love story attached, and India's oldest marble structure. If your schedule is tighter, our 4-night Ujjain-Maheshwar-Omkareshwar circuit covers the other three stops efficiently without Mandu.
Absolutely. Every Discover India tour is fully private and built around your preferences. We can adjust the pace, add extra nights at any stop, or combine this with another Madhya Pradesh circuit. Submit an enquiry and our specialists will tailor it for you at no obligation.
