From 30,000-Year-Old Cave Art to the Highest Hills in Madhya Pradesh

A genuinely wide-ranging 5-day circuit from Bhopal — the 'City of Lakes' and Madhya Pradesh's capital — taking in some of the state's most historically significant sites en route to Pachmarhi, the highest hill station in Madhya Pradesh and the only one in the state.

The journey opens in Bhopal itself, built around the artificial Upper and Lower Lakes, before a full-day excursion to Vidisha and neighbouring Sanchi — home to one of India's oldest surviving stone structures, the 3rd-century BCE Great Stupa, alongside the lesser-visited Udayagiri Caves and Heliodorus Pillar.

En route to Pachmarhi, the circuit stops at Bhimbetka — a UNESCO World Heritage Site holding over 700 rock shelters, some with paintings dating back an estimated 30,000 years, among the earliest known evidence of human artistic expression on the Indian subcontinent.

Pachmarhi itself, nicknamed the 'Queen of the Satpura Range' and set within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, closes the circuit with two full days of waterfalls, ancient cave temples, and the state's highest viewpoint at Dhoopgarh, before returning to Bhopal for departure.

Your questions, answered

Several of Pachmarhi's viewpoints and cave sites (including Apsara Vihar and Reech Garh) require a forest department permit and are accessed via designated jeep routes rather than private cars — this is a conservation measure within the Satpura Biosphere Reserve. We arrange this locally as part of your Pachmarhi sightseeing.

Yes — even without a specialist interest, the sheer scale (700+ rock shelters across 10 km) and the dramatic sandstone-and-forest setting make Bhimbetka a genuinely striking stop, and its status as one of the oldest known sites of human artistic expression anywhere on the subcontinent gives real context to the rest of Madhya Pradesh's ancient heritage.

Absolutely. Every Discover India tour is fully private and built around your preferences. We can adjust the pace, add extra nights at any stop, or combine this with another Madhya Pradesh circuit. Submit an enquiry and our specialists will tailor it for you at no obligation.
