Nine days through the full breadth of India's most extraordinary Himalayan landscape — from Leh's ancient Buddhist kingdom to the iconic houseboats of Srinagar's Dal Lake, via the Nubra Valley sand dunes, Pangong Tso's sapphire waters, and the historically charged war memorial landscape of Kargil and Dras.
The tour begins with three nights in Leh — enough time to acclimatise properly, explore the Indus Valley monasteries, cross Khardung La, and visit Alchi's extraordinary 11th-century frescoes. Then north to Nubra for the Bactrian camels and Diskit Monastery, east to Pangong Tso for an overnight on the lakeshore, and then the journey shifts west — the Srinagar–Leh Highway (NH1) in reverse, from the high plateau back toward Kashmir.
The Kargil section is historically significant and often overlooked: the Drass Valley (the second coldest inhabited place on earth, scene of the 1999 Kargil War) and the war memorial at Jaswant Garh are deeply moving. The descent from Kargil to Srinagar via the Zoji La Pass is the most dramatic single section of road in India — the landscape shifts in minutes from barren Ladakhi rock to green Kashmiri forest.
Srinagar provides the perfect contrast for the final two nights: Dal Lake houseboats, Shikara rides on the floating vegetable market, the three Mughal Gardens planted by Jahangir for Noor Jahan, and the ancient mosques of the old city. Two entirely different worlds, connected by one extraordinary road.

Welcome! Transfer to hotel. Mandatory acclimatisation rest — drink 3–4 litres of water, eat light, no exertion. Gentle bazaar stroll if feeling well. Early dinner and bed.
Full Leh sightseeing day. Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa in the morning. South of Leh: Shey Palace, Thiksey Monastery (49-ft Maitreya), Hemis Monastery (Ladakh's richest), and the Sangam confluence of the Zanskar and Indus Rivers.
Morning: drive west to Alchi Monastery (65 km, ~1.5 hrs) on the Indus Valley — the most important early Buddhist art site in Ladakh, founded in the 11th century by Rinchen Zangpo. The Sumstek temple's frescoes show Kashmiri, Central Asian, and early Tibetan art simultaneously. Afternoon: drive north to Khardung La (5,359m) for the high pass experience before tomorrow's Nubra crossing — today's acclimatisation at altitude prepares you for the crossing tomorrow.
Cross Khardung La (5,359m) into Nubra Valley. Diskit Monastery (oldest in Nubra, giant Maitreya statue). Hunder sand dunes — Bactrian camels roaming between dunes and the Shyok River in the most surreal Himalayan landscape. Optional sunset camel ride.
Drive from Nubra to Pangong Tso (150 km, ~5 hrs) via the Shyok River valley and Chang La (5,360m). Arrive at the lakeshore for the afternoon — Pangong Tso at 4,350m, 134 km long, shifting from turquoise to sapphire as the light changes. Overnight on the lakeshore.
Dawn at Pangong — the rose-gold first light on the lake. After breakfast, drive west to Kargil (300 km, ~7 hrs) via Leh and then west on NH1. The route passes through Lamayuru — Ladakh's oldest monastery, perched dramatically on a moonland plateau. Dras Valley (2,527m) — the second coldest inhabited place on earth and the scene of intense fighting in the 1999 Kargil War. The Dras War Memorial at Jaswant Garh honours the Indian soldiers who recaptured Tiger Hill and Tololing (visible above). Arrive Kargil.
Drive from Kargil to Srinagar (204 km, ~6 hrs) via Namika La (3,720m) and Fotu La (4,108m) — the two high passes of the Leh–Srinagar section. Then the Zoji La Pass (3,528m) — the gateway between Ladakh and Kashmir. The transformation of landscape at Zoji La is one of the most remarkable in India: barren rock and scree on the Ladakh side, dense pine forest and rushing streams on the Kashmir side — all within 10 minutes. Sonmarg (2,730m) — the gold meadow at the head of the Kashmir Valley — before the final descent to Srinagar. Check in to your Dal Lake houseboat.
Full Srinagar day — a complete contrast to everything in Ladakh. Dawn: Shikara ride on Dal Lake's floating vegetable market — an extraordinary spectacle of Shikara men poling their flower and produce boats through the morning mist. Three Mughal Gardens: Shalimar Bagh (1619 CE, Jahangir's gift to Noor Jahan), Nishat Bagh (1633 CE, 12 terraces from lake to mountain), and Chashme Shahi (1632 CE, natural spring). Old city: Jama Masjid (1402 CE, 378 wooden pillars), Shah Hamdan Mosque (1395 CE, painted wooden exterior), and the traditional craft lanes of Rainawari for Pashmina, papier-mâché, and walnut carving.
Final morning in Srinagar — Hazratbal Mosque on the lake's north shore (housing a sacred relic of the Prophet) and a morning Shikara ride on the quieter western channels of the lake. Boulevard Road for last-minute Kashmiri shopping — saffron, Pashmina shawls, dried fruits, and walnut wood carvings. Transfer to Srinagar Airport for your departure. Tour concludes.

Most tours that combine Kashmir and Ladakh drive the Srinagar–Leh highway eastward (Srinagar → Kargil → Leh). This tour does it in reverse — fly into Leh, explore Ladakh first, then drive west to Kashmir via Kargil and the Zoji La. The advantage is that you spend maximum time acclimatising in Leh before the high-altitude drives (Khardung La, Chang La), and you arrive in Srinagar at the end of the tour feeling relaxed — the houseboat and Mughal Gardens after 7 days of high-altitude adventure feel extraordinary. You also get to experience the Zoji La transformation (from barren Ladakh to green Kashmir) in the most dramatic direction — descending into forest after days of barren mountain.
Yes — we can extend the Srinagar section by 1–2 days to add Gulmarg (Asia's highest cable car, Gondola to 3,979m) or Pahalgam (Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, Lidder River). Yes — significantly. The Kargil War (May–July 1999) was fought on the peaks visible directly above the NH1 highway. Tiger Hill (5,140m), Tololing, and Point 4875 — all visible from the road — were the sites of intense combat. The Drass War Memorial at Jaswant Garh is a thoughtfully designed memorial to the 527 Indian soldiers who gave their lives in the conflict. A visit here is genuinely moving and provides essential context for this extraordinary landscape. The memorial museum contains personal effects, weapons, and accounts of individual acts of valour.
The fastest way is by air — Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport has daily flights from Delhi (1h 10m), Srinagar, Jammu, and Chandigarh. Book well in advance as flights fill quickly June–September. Alternatively, the Manali–Leh or Srinagar–Leh highway (both open June–October) are legendary 2-day mountain drives.
Yes — Leh is at 3,524m and several destinations exceed 5,000m. Key precautions: rest on Day 1 (no exertion), drink 3–4 litres of water daily, avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours, and consult your doctor about Diamox before travel. Our vehicles carry oxygen cylinders. Do not attempt this tour if you have cardiac or severe respiratory conditions.

June–September is peak season — all roads and passes open, maximum sunshine, warm days (20–25°C in Leh, cold nights). July–August is busiest; book well ahead. October has brilliant clarity and fewer crowds but some high passes may close. Avoid November–May for this tour (most passes closed).
