Srinagar opens with two nights — a dawn Shikara ride on the floating vegetable market, all three Mughal Gardens, and an evening in the old city's lanes. An overnight in Gulmarg lets you experience the meadow after the day-trippers leave — just the peaks, the silence, and a sky full of stars at 2,650 metres. The Gondola to Kongdori at 3,979m is included.
A day excursion to Sonmarg (2,730m) offers the Thajiwas Glacier trek — an easy 4 km walk through wildflower meadows to a permanent glacier. Then two nights in Pahalgam: the Betaab Valley, the Aru pastoral valley, Baisaran meadow above the town, and the dramatic Chandanwari gorge at 2,895m. Welcome to Kashmir! Transfer to your houseboat or hotel. Afternoon Shikara ride on Dal Lake — the most atmospheric introduction to Srinagar, with the lake turning golden at sunset and the Zabarwan Mountains behind. Hazratbal Mosque on the lake's north shore. Evening: the old city's lanes for Wazwan dinner — Kashmir's celebrated multi-course feast of slow-cooked lamb.
Dawn (6:00 AM): Shikara ride on the floating vegetable market — a spectacular spectacle as Shikara men pole their flower and vegetable boats through the morning mist. Return for breakfast. Three Mughal Gardens on Dal Lake's eastern shore: Shalimar Bagh (1619 CE, Jahangir's gift to Noor Jahan), Nishat Bagh (1633 CE, 12 terraces ascending to the Zabarwan ridge), and Chashme Shahi (1632 CE, natural spring at the foot of the mountain).
Old city afternoon: Jama Masjid (1402 CE, 378 wooden pillars), Shah Hamdan Mosque (Khanqah-i-Moula, 1395 CE, painted wooden exterior unique in Kashmir), and the traditional craft lanes — papier-mâché, walnut carving, and Pashmina shawls.
Drive to Gulmarg (50 km, ~1.5 hrs). The Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1 (2,650m → 3,979m Kongdori) — Asia's highest cable car. The panorama from Kongdori encompasses Nanga Parbat (8,126m), Nun Kun (7,135m), and the entire western Himalayan arc. Optional Phase 2 to Apharwat (4,200m) in summer for trekkers.
After the gondola, the day-trippers depart — and Gulmarg transforms. An evening walk through the deserted meadow as the light fades on the peaks. The 1895 St Mary's Church and the highest golf course in the world (9 holes, 2,650m). Dinner and overnight at your mountain resort as the night sky over the meadow reveals thousands of stars.
Morning: drive from Gulmarg to Sonmarg (90 km via Srinagar, ~3 hrs). Sonmarg (2,730m, 'Gold Meadow') sits at the confluence of the Sindh River and Thajiwas Glacier — the name comes from the golden light that fills the valley in late afternoon. The Thajiwas Glacier trek (4 km return, easy gradient, ~2 hrs) through wildflower meadows of wild roses, campanulas, and Himalayan poppies to the glacier snout.
Drive from Sonmarg south to Pahalgam (165 km via Srinagar, ~4.5 hrs). Arrive in the Valley of Shepherds (2,130m) and check in. Evening walk along the Lidder River bank.
A full day in and around Pahalgam. Betaab Valley (15 km) — an alpine meadow of extraordinary beauty named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot here; open pine forest, the clear Lidder River, and snow peaks above. Aru Valley (12 km) — a remote pastoral valley with traditional wooden houses and views of the Kolahoi Glacier (5,425m). Baisaran (3 km, pony ride or short walk) — a sloping open meadow above Pahalgam with views across the entire valley used by Gujjar nomads.
Optional afternoon: Chandanwari (16 km, 2,895m) — the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, with a glacial valley and dramatic mountain scenery. The river bridge here is the one crossed by hundreds of thousands of Amarnath pilgrims each summer.
A final morning in Pahalgam — one last walk along the Lidder River before checkout. Drive back to Srinagar (96 km, ~2.5 hrs). Optional last stop on Boulevard Road or Dal Gate for Kashmiri handicraft shopping — papier-mâché, Pashmina, saffron, walnut wood. Transfer to Srinagar Airport for your departure. Tour concludes at Srinagar Airport.

The 6-day Kashmir Complete adds a full two nights in Pahalgam (versus none in the 5-day version) — giving you a proper day to explore Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, Baisaran, and optionally Chandanwari. It also structures the Sonmarg visit as a day excursion en route from Gulmarg to Pahalgam rather than an overnight. If you want to see all four destinations and have time for proper valley exploration in Pahalgam, this 6-day version is significantly richer.
Pahalgam is the base camp and starting point for the Amarnath Yatra — one of Hinduism's most important annual pilgrimages to the ice Shivalinga in the Amarnath Cave at 3,888m (conducted July–August each year, drawing 300,000–600,000 pilgrims). The Lidder River is one of Kashmir's finest trout fishing streams (permit required). Pahalgam also has a famous Mamleshwar Shiva Temple and traditional Gujjar shepherd communities who bring their flocks through the valley every spring and autumn.
