Five days that cover all the essential Kashmir experiences with enough time at each to actually feel the place — from the storied houseboats of Dal Lake to the snow-capped meadow of Sonmarg, where India's finest glacier trek begins.
Srinagar opens the tour with two nights — enough time for a dawn Shikara ride on Dal Lake, all three Mughal Gardens, an exploration of the old city's Jama Masjid and traditional craft lanes, and an evening on the houseboat as the mountains turn golden at dusk.
An overnight in Gulmarg adds a completely different experience — staying in the meadow itself, with the option of an evening walk as the day-trippers leave and the mountains become yours alone. Kongdori at sunset from the Gondola is one of the finest mountain views in India.
Sonmarg (Gold Meadow) at 2,730m is the tour's final destination — a 3-km-wide alpine valley at the junction of the Sindh River and Thajiwas Glacier. The trek to Thajiwas Glacier (4 km return, easy gradient) passes through meadows of wildflowers with the glacier visible for much of the approach. In the afternoon, the golden light on the Sonmarg valley that gives the place its name is extraordinary.

Welcome to Kashmir! Transfer to your houseboat or hotel. Evening Shikara ride on Dal Lake — the most atmospheric introduction to Srinagar, with the lake lit golden by the setting sun and the Zabarwan Mountains behind. Visit Hazratbal Mosque on the lake's north shore. Dinner at a Wazwan restaurant in the old city — Kashmir's royal multi-course feast of lamb dishes, rogan josh, gushtaba, and yakhni prepared over hours.
Dawn (6:00 AM): Shikara ride on the floating vegetable market — an extraordinary spectacle as Shikara men pole their flower and vegetable boats toward the market in the early mist. Return for breakfast. Morning: the three Mughal Gardens — Shalimar Bagh (1619, Jahangir's gift to Noor Jahan), Nishat Bagh (1633, 12 terraces from lake to mountain), and Chashme Shahi (1632, natural spring).
Old city exploration: Jama Masjid (1402 CE, one of Kashmir's most important mosques, with 378 wooden pillars and a central courtyard), Shah Hamdan Mosque (Khanqah-i-Moula, 1395 CE, extraordinary painted wooden exterior), and the old bazaars of Rainawari for traditional Kashmiri craft — papier-mâché, walnut carving, and Pashmina.
Drive to Gulmarg (50 km, ~1.5 hrs). The Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1 (2,650m → 3,979m Kongdori) — Asia's highest cable car; the views of Nanga Parbat (8,126m), Nun Kun, and the entire western Himalayan range from Kongdori are extraordinary. Optional Phase 2 (Kongdori → Apharwat Peak, 4,200m) for expert skiers in winter or high-altitude trekkers in summer.
After the gondola, the day-trippers drive back to Srinagar — and Gulmarg becomes a different place entirely. An evening walk through the meadow as the light fades on the mountains, dinner at your resort, and a night at 2,650m with the stars overhead.
Morning: one last walk in Gulmarg's meadow before checkout. Drive to Sonmarg (90 km via Srinagar, ~3 hrs) — the road follows the Sindh River valley through the dramatic Zoji La approach, with waterfalls, poplar avenues, and the mountains closing in. Sonmarg (2,730m, 'Gold Meadow') is a wide alpine valley at the confluence of the Sindh River and the Thajiwas Glacier — named for the golden light that fills the meadow in late afternoon.
Afternoon: the Thajiwas Glacier trek (4 km return, ~2 hrs, easy gradient) — a walk through meadows of wild roses, campanulas, and Himalayan poppies to the snout of a permanent glacier. Ponies are available. Evening: the golden-hour light on Sonmarg that gives the valley its name is unforgettable.
Final morning: an early walk in Sonmarg as the valley wakes — shepherds moving their flocks, the glacier glinting in the new light. Drive back to Srinagar (87 km, ~2.5 hrs), optionally via Pahalgam for the Betaab Valley and Lidder River scenery. Last-minute Kashmiri handicraft shopping on Boulevard Road or Dal Gate before transfer to Srinagar Airport. Tour concludes at Srinagar Airport.

Sonmarg ('Gold Meadow') is a 3-km-wide alpine valley at 2,730m, 87 km northeast of Srinagar on the Srinagar–Leh highway. The name comes from the golden light that fills the meadow in late afternoon — when the sun falls at a low angle across the Sindh River valley and the surrounding peaks, the entire landscape glows amber and gold. The Thajiwas Glacier above the valley is one of the most accessible glaciers in India — a 4 km return walk through wildflower meadows. Sonmarg is also the starting point of the Baltal route to the Amarnath Cave. It is significantly less visited than Gulmarg or Pahalgam, which makes it more peaceful and atmospheric.
Absolutely — an overnight in Gulmarg transforms the experience. During the day, hundreds of day-trippers from Srinagar fill the gondola queue and the meadow. By 5 PM they all leave and Gulmarg becomes almost silent — just the meadow, the mountains, and the fading light. The evening walk through the deserted golf course and the night sky from 2,650m are remarkable. The morning is also spectacular: Kongdori and Apharwat Peak turn pink at dawn and the village wakes quietly. It is one of our favourite overnight stops in all of Kashmir.

April–June (spring/summer): gardens in bloom, pleasant temperatures (15–25°C), ideal for Dal Lake and Pahalgam. July–September: cooler, some rain, but Gulmarg and Sonmarg are lush and green. October–November: autumn colours on chinar trees, crisp air, excellent visibility. December–March: heavy snowfall — Gulmarg becomes a ski resort, Srinagar's Dal Lake sometimes freezes. Each season has its own beauty; October and April are generally considered the finest months.
