Dal Lake, Alpine Meadows & The Valley of Shepherds

The Kashmir Classic is India's most beloved short Himalayan holiday — three nights covering the essential Kashmir: Srinagar's iconic Dal Lake and Mughal Gardens, the alpine ski resort of Gulmarg, and the pastoral beauty of Pahalgam.

Srinagar — the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir — is built around the shimmering Dal Lake, a 26-square-kilometre lake that has been described as 'the jewel of Kashmir'. A Shikara (traditional wooden boat) ride at dawn, past the floating vegetable markets, lotus gardens, and houseboats that line the lake, is one of the most ethereal experiences in India. The Mughal Gardens — Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi — planted by the Mughal emperors along the lake's eastern shore, are among the finest formal gardens in the Indian subcontinent.

Gulmarg (Meadow of Flowers) at 2,650m is reached by a 50 km drive from Srinagar. The Gulmarg Gondola — Asia's highest cable car, rising to 3,979m at Kongdori and then 4,200m at Apharwat Peak — provides panoramic views of the Himalayan range including Nanga Parbat (8,126m). In winter (December–March), Gulmarg is India's finest ski resort; in summer it is a rolling meadow of wildflowers with a 9-hole golf course at 2,650m.

Pahalgam — the Valley of Shepherds — is 96 km from Srinagar in the Lidder Valley at 2,130m. The Betaab Valley (named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot here), the Aru Valley, and the confluence at Baisaran offer landscapes of extraordinary pastoral beauty — alpine meadows, pine forests, and the fast-flowing Lidder River.

What makes this journey special

1.Dawn Shikara ride on Dal Lake — past floating vegetable markets, lotus gardens, and houseboats.
2.Shalimar Bagh (1619 CE) — the greatest Mughal garden in Kashmir, planted by Emperor Jahangir for Empress Noor Jahan.
3.Nishat Bagh (Garden of Joy) — 12 terraced gardens ascending from Dal Lake to the Zabarwan Mountains.
4.Gulmarg Gondola (Phase 1: 2,650m → 3,979m) — Asia's highest cable car with views of Nanga Parbat.
5.Gulmarg meadow walk — wildflowers, a colonial-era golf course, and the St Mary's Church (1895).
6.Pahalgam — the Valley of Shepherds at 2,130m with the fast-flowing Lidder River.
7.Betaab Valley — a stunning alpine meadow in Pahalgam named after the 1983 Bollywood film.
8.Aru Village and Chandanwari — remote valleys above Pahalgam with nomadic Gujjar shepherds.

Day 01
Arrive Srinagar · Dal Lake & Old City
Srinagar Airport → Shikara · Hazratbal Mosque
+

Welcome to Kashmir! Transfer from Srinagar Airport to your hotel or traditional houseboat on Dal Lake. Afternoon: Shikara ride on Dal Lake — the most atmospheric introduction to Srinagar. The 26-square-kilometre lake is lined with houseboats, floating vegetable gardens, and Shikara men carrying everything from flowers to carpet salesmen. Visit the Hazratbal Mosque on the lake's northern shore — a sacred shrine housing a relic believed to be a hair of the Prophet Muhammad, and the only marble mosque in Kashmir.

Evening: the old city's Lal Chowk and the lanes around the Jama Masjid for Kashmiri wazwan restaurants and handicraft shops — walnut wood carvings, papier-mâché, and the finest Pashmina shawls.

Day 02
Mughal Gardens & Gulmarg
Shalimar · Nishat · Chashme Shahi · Gulmarg Gondola

Morning: the three great Mughal Gardens on the eastern shore of Dal Lake. Shalimar Bagh (1619 CE) — the largest and finest Mughal garden in Kashmir, planted by Emperor Jahangir for his beloved Empress Noor Jahan; its four terraces, central canal, and chinar tree avenue are extraordinary. Nishat Bagh (1633 CE, 'Garden of Joy') — 12 terraces ascending from the lake to the Zabarwan Mountains, with views across Dal Lake. Chashme Shahi (1632 CE, 'Royal Spring') — the smallest of the three, built around a natural spring of cold, sweet water.

Afternoon: drive to Gulmarg (50 km, ~1.5 hrs). The Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1 (2,650m → 3,979m Kongdori) — Asia's highest cable car, with panoramic views of Nanga Parbat and the western Himalaya. Walk through Gulmarg's meadow (wildflowers in summer; ski runs in winter). Return to Srinagar.

Aru Valley (12 km) — a quiet, remote pastoral valley with traditional wooden houses, grazing ponies, and views of the Kolahoi Glacier.

Baisaran (3 km, pony ride or short walk) — a sloping open meadow above Pahalgam with views across the entire valley. Local Gujjar nomads with their livestock pass through in summer and spring.

Your questions, answered

A traditional Dal Lake houseboat is one of the quintessential Kashmir experiences — elaborately carved walnut-wood interiors, a private sun deck on the water, and a Shikara boat that takes you ashore. Houseboats range from budget to deluxe; the finest are the 5-star heritage houseboats with antique furniture, modern bathrooms, and butler service. We recommend at least one night on a houseboat (typically the first night in Srinagar). They are safe, comfortable, and the experience — waking up on the lake to the sounds of the Shikara men, the Azan, and the mist over the mountains — is genuinely extraordinary.

In summer (April–October): the Gulmarg Gondola for panoramic Himalayan views, walk through the meadow's wildflowers, explore the highest golf course in the world (9 holes, 2,650m), and visit the 1895 St Mary's Church. In winter (December–March): Gulmarg becomes India's finest ski resort with 22 km of pistes. The Gondola gives access to Kongdori and Apharwat Peak for expert runs; the lower slopes are suitable for beginners. Skiing, snowboarding, and snow activities are all available with rental equipment and instructors. We include Phase 1 of the Gondola in the base package; Phase 2 (to Apharwat, 4,200m) is an optional add-on.

Kashmir has been welcoming tourists very successfully for several years and is among the fastest-growing tourism destinations in India. The main tourist areas — Srinagar's Dal Lake, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonmarg, and Patnitop — are safe and well-managed. We monitor the situation continuously and maintain close contacts with our on-ground team. Our flexible booking policy allows rescheduling if any concerns arise. Millions of Indian and international tourists visit Kashmir each year without incident.

April–June (spring/summer): gardens in bloom, pleasant temperatures (15–25°C), ideal for Dal Lake and Pahalgam. July–September: cooler, some rain, but Gulmarg and Sonmarg are lush and green. October–November: autumn colours on chinar trees, crisp air, excellent visibility. December–March: heavy snowfall — Gulmarg becomes a ski resort, Srinagar's Dal Lake sometimes freezes. Each season has its own beauty; October and April are generally considered the finest months.
