Panna National Park, spread across 542 sq km along the Ken River in northern Madhya Pradesh, suffered one of Indian conservation's most sobering setbacks when its tiger population was declared locally extinct in 2009 due to poaching — only to become, in the years since, one of the country's most celebrated tiger reintroduction success stories.

The park's centrepiece landscape feature is the Ken River gorge, which the river has carved through dramatic teak forest and rocky plateau over millennia — Pandav Falls, a multi-tiered cascade reached by a short forest walk, and the panoramic Hinauta viewpoint both showcase this terrain at its most striking.

Panna is also historically significant as one of India's few diamond-mining regions, with small-scale traditional mining still continuing in licensed areas nearby — a curious historical footnote to a destination now defined almost entirely by its wildlife recovery.
