The route runs from Bangalore through the royal heritage of Mysore, climbs into the Nilgiri Mountains to Ooty, descends to the Palani granite plateau of Kodaikanal, crosses the plains to Madurai — one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth — and ends at Kanyakumari where three seas meet in a sunrise of extraordinary beauty.
Each destination is entirely distinct: Bangalore's cafés and Vijayanagara-era temples; Mysore's illuminated palace and silk-weaving tradition; the cool forest air and colonial heritage of Ooty; Kodaikanal's dramatic cliff walks; Madurai's living Meenakshi Amman Temple — a 17th-century complex so vast and so active with daily worship that it functions as a small city. And then Kanyakumari, where the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and Indian Ocean converge and pilgrims have come to bathe at the sacred confluence for two thousand years.

Welcome to South India! Transfer from Bangalore Airport. Lalbagh Botanical Garden — 240 acres with a Victorian glasshouse. Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace (1784) — fine two-storey teak structure, now a museum. Visveswaraiah Industrial & Technology Museum. Drive past the flood-lit Vidhana Soudha. Evening: Bull Temple (Nandi Bull of Basavanagudi) and Bangalore's vibrant café culture on Church Street.
Drive to Mysore (145 km, 3 hrs). Visit the magnificent Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas) — completed 1912 in Indo-Saracenic style, with 12 temples in the grounds and the extraordinary Durbar Hall. Climb Chamundi Hills for the Sri Chamundeshwari Temple and the giant 17th-century Nandi (bull) sculpture. Evening: Devaraja Market — jasmine, incense, silk, and Mysore sandal soap in a 19th-century covered market. If visiting on Sunday: the palace illumination at 7 PM (97,000 bulbs).
Jaganmohan Art Gallery — royal paintings, ivory carvings, musical instruments, and Raja Ravi Varma works. Mysore Government Silk Factory — guided tour of India's finest pure silk weaving, from raw cocoon to finished Kanchipuram-style fabric. Brindavan Gardens (19 km, Krishnarajasagar Dam) — 60 terraced acres of water gardens; the evening Musical Fountain illumination show is one of the finest in India.
Drive south (125 km, ~4 hrs) through Bandipur National Park — elephants, Indian bison, and spotted deer are frequently seen along the forest road. The climb up the Ooty ghat (36 hairpin bends) is itself a dramatic experience, with views across the Deccan plains below and the forest closing in above. Arrive Ooty at 2,240 metres. Evening stroll through the town's colonial streets.
Morning in Ooty: the Botanical Garden (22 ha, established 1848; 20-million-year-old fossilised tree trunk), Ooty Lake, and Doddabetta Peak (2,637m) for panoramic views across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Then drive south to Kodaikanal (190 km, ~5 hrs) through the Palani Hills. Arrive at 2,133 metres — geologically distinct from the Nilgiris, with granite outcrops, shola forests, and the famous lake in its natural amphitheatre. Evening walk around Kodaikanal Lake.
A full day on Kodaikanal's extraordinary granite plateau. Coaker's Walk — a 1-km promenade cut into the cliff edge with 2,000-metre vertical drops to the plains below and a telescope for long-distance viewing. Pillar Rocks — three vertical granite pillars rising 122m above the valley floor, surrounded by shola forest and Nilgiri langur monkeys. Berijam Lake (permit required, arranged by us) — 25 km through one of the finest montane shola forest reserves in Tamil Nadu. Bear Shola Falls and the Shenbaganur Museum of Natural History complete the day.
Descend from the Kodaikanal plateau to the plains of Tamil Nadu (100 km, ~3 hrs). Arrive in Madurai — one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, and the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. Check in and visit the Meenakshi Amman Temple in the afternoon — a 17th-century Dravidian complex covering 6.3 acres, with 14 gopurams (gateway towers) rising to 52 metres, each covered in thousands of painted stucco sculptures of gods, demons, and mythological beings. The temple is a living, functioning place of worship where thousands of devotees come daily. Evening: the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple's closing ceremony (closing rituals, 9 PM) is a profound spectacle.
A full day exploring Madurai — the 'Athens of the East' and one of the oldest surviving cities in India. Return to the Meenakshi Amman Temple at dawn for the morning rituals — the atmosphere is wholly different from the afternoon and evening, intimate and deeply devotional. The Thirumalai Nayak Palace (17th century, extraordinary stucco pillars and a massive assembly hall) is one of the finest examples of Dravidian palace architecture. The Alagar Koil temple (14 km from Madurai, on a hillock amid rock formations) is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in a forest setting. The Gandhi Museum houses an extraordinary collection relating to the Indian independence movement — including the dhoti Gandhi was wearing when he was assassinated.
Drive south from Madurai to Kanyakumari (250 km, ~4.5 hrs) — across the flat, fertile plains of southern Tamil Nadu, through toddy palm groves and rice paddies, to the very tip of the Indian peninsula. En route, visit Tirunelveli — famous for its halwa (wheat sweet) and the magnificent Nellaiappar Temple (11th century). Arrive Kanyakumari in time for the afternoon. Visit the Kumari Amman Temple on the beachfront (the presiding goddess Kanyakumari is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India). Boat ride to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial on a sea rock where Swami Vivekananda meditated in 1892, and the adjacent 133-foot Thiruvalluvar Statue. Sunset at the tip of India — three seas visible simultaneously.
The reason to spend a night in Kanyakumari: the sunrise over the Bay of Bengal while the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean glow simultaneously to the west — one of India's most transcendent natural moments, and one that draws thousands of pilgrims every dawn. After breakfast, visit the Gandhi Smarak Mandapam — a memorial museum built exactly where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes rested before immersion, designed so that on Gandhi's birthday (October 2nd) the sun's first rays illuminate the exact spot. Depart for Trivandrum Airport (90 km) or onward to other South India destinations.

Covering 6.3 acres in the heart of Madurai, it has 14 gopurams (the tallest rising 52 metres), around 33,000 sculptures, and receives an estimated 10,000–15,000 pilgrims daily. Unlike many heritage temples that function primarily as tourist sites, Meenakshi is a continuously functioning place of active, daily Saiva and Vaishnava worship with a full schedule of rituals, processions, and ceremonies. The evening closing ritual (Alangaram) — in which the idol of Lord Sundareswarar is ceremonially carried to the Goddess Meenakshi's chamber — is particularly moving. We recommend arriving in the evening for the full atmosphere.

October to March is ideal — comfortable temperatures across all destinations, clear skies, and the post-monsoon lush landscape. Tamil Nadu (Madurai, Kanyakumari) is warm year-round but the hill stations (Ooty, Kodaikanal) are cool and pleasant. April–June brings heat to the plains (38–42°C) but the hill stations remain comfortable. July–September is monsoon season; some areas are very wet. We do not recommend this tour July–September for most travellers.
