India's Second-Largest Mangrove Forest, and a Beach Where the Sea Disappears

A 5-day journey into Odisha's wildest coastal landscapes — Bhitarkanika National Park, India's second-largest mangrove ecosystem and home to the country's largest population of saltwater crocodiles, and Chandipur, a genuinely unusual beach where the sea recedes up to 5 km at low tide, earning it the nickname the 'vanishing sea'.

The journey opens with the drive to Bhitarkanika via Kendrapara, followed by a boat safari deep into the mangrove creeks — Bhitarkanika holds India's largest population of saltwater crocodiles (including some of the largest individuals recorded anywhere), alongside water monitors, king cobras, and over 215 recorded bird species.

A second day allows a possible excursion (seasonal, January-March) toward Gahirmatha Beach, the world's largest nesting ground for Olive Ridley sea turtles, where hundreds of thousands of turtles come ashore to lay eggs — one of the most significant marine conservation sites in India.

From Bhitarkanika, the route continues to Chandipur, where the Bay of Bengal recedes dramatically at low tide, exposing kilometres of flat sandy seabed that visitors can walk across — a genuinely unique coastal phenomenon found at very few beaches in the world, before the journey concludes back at Bhubaneswar.
