Maharashtra's Finest Tiger Reserves — Eight Safaris, Two Extraordinary Forests

A dedicated wildlife circuit for travellers who want serious time in the jungle rather than a single rushed overnight — two full days each in Tadoba and Pench, Maharashtra's two most celebrated tiger reserves, with a total of eight jeep safaris across the trip.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve — Maharashtra's oldest and largest national park, and one of India's most prolific in terms of tiger density — is known among wildlife photographers as one of the most reliable big-cat destinations in the country. Teak and bamboo forest, the Tadoba and Andhari lakes, and a healthy population of leopards, sloth bears, and Indian bison round out the reserve's exceptional biodiversity.

Pench National Park, straddling the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border, is widely believed to be the landscape that inspired Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book' — the Pench River, the sal and teak forests, and the rolling, hilly terrain create one of the most picturesque safari settings in central India. Pench forms a continuous wildlife corridor with Tadoba, allowing tigers to move freely between the two reserves.

Both parks are reached easily from Nagpur, the gateway city of central India, making this an efficient circuit for a focused wildlife trip without long, wearying road journeys between safaris.

Your questions, answered

A single overnight in a tiger reserve typically yields only 2 safaris (one evening, one morning), which is enough to see the forest but leaves relatively little margin for a tiger sighting if the cats aren't active that particular day. By giving two full days (4 safaris) to each park, this itinerary roughly doubles your opportunities at each reserve and allows safaris into different zones, which significantly improves the realistic probability of strong sightings across the full trip — this is the pace we recommend to any guest whose primary goal is photographing or seeing tigers, rather than simply visiting the parks.

Yes — this is precisely the kind of focused, safari-dense itinerary that wildlife photographers typically request. With 8 safaris across two of central India's finest reserves and naturalist guides who know the resident tigers, leopards, and their territories, you will have substantially more opportunities for quality sightings and photographs than a standard one-night-per-park tourist itinerary. We can also discuss specific zone preferences with you in advance if you have particular individual tigers or photographic compositions in mind.

October to June is the safari season (parks close mid-June to early October for monsoon breeding season). The best sightings are typically February to May — as temperatures rise, water sources shrink and tigers, along with other wildlife, congregate more predictably around remaining waterholes, making sightings considerably more likely. April–May is peak season for this reason, though daytime temperatures can exceed 40°C.

No safari can guarantee a tiger sighting — this is wild nature, not a zoo. However, Tadoba has one of the highest tiger densities in India, and Pench (the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book') is equally renowned. With multiple safaris across two parks, your overall chances are excellent. Even without a tiger, leopards, sloth bears, Indian bison (gaur), wild dogs, and over 250 bird species make every safari rewarding.

Both Tadoba and Pench operate a permit system with a limited number of vehicles per zone per safari slot, bookable up to 120 days in advance. Permits are zone-specific and gate-specific. We book all permits on your behalf as part of this tour — please confirm your travel dates as early as possible, especially for weekends, holidays, and the peak March–May season, when permits sell out quickly.

Absolutely. Every Discover India tour is fully private and built around your preferences. We can add extra safaris, extend any destination, or combine with Kanha or Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh. Submit an enquiry and our specialists will redesign the itinerary for you at no obligation.

Cancellations 60+ days before departure receive a full refund minus a small admin fee and any non-refundable safari permit costs already paid to the forest department. 30–59 days: 75% refund. 15–29 days: 50% refund. Under 15 days: no refund. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance.
