A Salt Desert That Glows Under Moonlight, & a 5,000-Year-Old Harappan City

A genuinely unique 5-day circuit through Kutch — India's largest district, and home to one of the country's most extraordinary natural landscapes: the Great Rann of Kutch, a vast white salt desert that turns dazzling under sunlight and glows silver under the full moon.

Bhuj anchors the circuit with its 18th-19th century palace museums — Aina Mahal's 'Hall of Mirrors' and Prag Mahal's Italian Gothic architecture — before the journey continues to Dhordo, gateway to the White Desert and the seasonal Rann Utsav festival, with camel rides, folk performances, and sweeping views from Kala Dungar, the highest point in Kutch.

A day excursion brings Dholavira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest and best-preserved Indus Valley Civilisation cities, reached via the dramatic 'Road to Heaven' — a causeway flanked by salt flats on both sides. The circuit concludes with Mandvi, a relaxed Arabian Sea beach town with a working 400-year-old shipbuilding yard and the Rajput-colonial Vijay Vilas Palace.

Your questions, answered

Rann Utsav is a seasonal cultural festival held at Dhordo's Tent City from approximately late October to early March, with nightly folk music, dance, and craft stalls. The White Desert itself is visible throughout this same October-March window regardless of specific festival dates, so you'll experience the salt desert either way — the festival simply adds extra cultural programming.

Yes, in a good way — a Bhunga is a traditional circular Kutchi mud hut with a thatched roof, adapted for tourist stays with modern comforts (attached bathroom, proper bedding) while retaining the authentic architecture and cool interior temperature Kutch's building tradition is known for. Standard AC tents are also available at Dhordo if you'd prefer a more conventional stay.
