A Genuine Medical Tradition, Not a Spa Weekend

Kerala is the birthplace of Ayurveda, and has preserved traditional Panchakarma practice for over 3,000 years — the state government officially recognises and regulates Ayurvedic medicine at a level no other region in the world matches. This retreat is built around that fact: a genuine 14-day programme, the traditional minimum duration considered necessary to prepare the body, carry out the detoxification therapies safely, and allow proper rejuvenation afterward.

Panchakarma means 'five actions' — Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (purgation), Basti (medicated enema), Nasya (nasal administration), and Raktamokshana (blood purification) — five classical procedures, individually prescribed based on your Ayurvedic constitution (Prakriti) following a detailed doctor consultation on arrival. Not every guest receives all five; your physician determines which are appropriate for your body and health goals.

Daily supporting therapies — Abhyanga (synchronised herbal oil massage), Kizhi (herbal poultice massage), Shirodhara (a continuous stream of warm oil across the forehead), and Dhanyamladhara — run alongside daily yoga, meditation, and a fully Ayurvedic vegetarian diet prepared according to classical dietary principles. This is a genuine clinical retreat, not a resort spa package — guests are encouraged to unplug, slow down, and give the process the full time it needs.

What makes this journey special

1.Receive a detailed Ayurvedic constitution (Prakriti) consultation with a qualified physician on arrival.
2.Undergo classical Panchakarma therapies — Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana — as individually prescribed.
3.Receive daily supporting therapies: Abhyanga, Kizhi, Shirodhara, and Dhanyamladhara.
4.Follow a fully Ayurvedic vegetarian diet, freshly prepared according to classical dietary principles.
5.Practise daily yoga and meditation alongside your treatment programme.
6.Take a complimentary boat ride into the Kumarakom backwaters during your stay.
7.Stay in a low-occupancy retreat setting for genuine doctor access and personal attention throughout.
8.Experience Ayurveda as it has been practised in Kerala for over 3,000 years — a functioning medical system, not a wellness trend.

Day 01
Arrive Kochi · Transfer to Kumarakom
Airport pickup · Physician consultation · Settling in
+

Namaste! Welcome to Kerala. On arrival at Kochi International Airport, meet our representative and transfer to your Ayurveda retreat in Kumarakom (approximately 90 km, ~2 hours), set on the tranquil backwaters. On arrival, check in and settle into your room. In the afternoon, meet your Ayurvedic physician for a detailed consultation — pulse diagnosis, a review of your health history, and an assessment of your Prakriti (constitutional type) — which shapes your entire 14-day treatment plan. A light, easily digestible dinner is served as your body begins to prepare for the programme ahead.

Day 02
Preparatory Phase Begins
Purvakarma — internal oleation & body preparation
+

The Panchakarma process traditionally begins with Purvakarma, a preparatory phase readying the body for deeper detoxification. This typically includes Snehana (internal oleation with medicated ghee or oil, taken orally under physician guidance) and Swedana (herbal steam therapy), continued over the coming days to loosen toxins and prepare the digestive system. Daily gentle yoga and pranayama (breathing practice) begin today, alongside your first Abhyanga full-body herbal oil massage.

Purvakarma Continues
Daily Abhyanga & Swedana · Backwater boat ride
+

Days 3-4 continue the preparatory Snehana and Swedana protocol, with your physician monitoring your body's readiness to progress toward the main detoxification therapies. Daily Abhyanga and Kizhi (herbal poultice massage, using warm bundles of medicinal herbs and rice) continue to support the process. This afternoon, enjoy a complimentary boat ride into the Kumarakom backwaters — a genuinely restorative, low-exertion break from the treatment schedule.

Day 05
Pradhankarma Begins — Main Detoxification
Individually prescribed Panchakarma procedure
+

The main detoxification phase (Pradhankarma) begins today, with your physician administering whichever of the five classical procedures — Vamana, Virechana, Basti, or Nasya — are appropriate for your constitution and health goals; not every guest undergoes every procedure. This is typically the most intensive stretch of the retreat, and the daily schedule is deliberately unhurried, with rest actively encouraged between therapies.

At the retreat's midpoint, your physician conducts a fuller review of your progress and adjusts the remaining treatment plan accordingly. Panchakarma therapy continues, alongside Shirodhara sessions for many guests — a continuous, gently poured stream of warm medicated oil across the forehead, deeply calming to the nervous system.

Your questions, answered

14 days is the traditionally recognised minimum for a genuine Panchakarma detox to be safely completed — the body needs several days of preparation (Purvakarma) before the main detoxification procedures, and several more days of guided rejuvenation (Rasayana) afterward. Retreat centres and Ayurvedic physicians are consistent on this point: anything shorter is better described as a wellness break than a true Panchakarma programme. If your schedule genuinely can't accommodate 14 days, we can arrange a shorter introductory Ayurveda & spa itinerary instead — see our Kerala Backwaters & Ayurveda Spa Escape.

Not necessarily, and that's by design — Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana are each prescribed individually based on your Ayurvedic constitution (Prakriti) and current health, following your physician's consultation on Day 1. A good retreat never applies a one-size-fits-all protocol; your treatment plan is built specifically for your body.

Loose, comfortable cotton clothing you don't mind getting oil-stained (the medicated oils used in daily massage are genuinely potent), a light shawl or jacket for cooler mornings, and minimal valuables — most of your time will be spent in retreat attire. We'll send a detailed packing list upon booking.

Absolutely. Every Discover India tour is fully private and built around your preferences. We can adjust the treatment intensity, add extra rest days, or combine this with another wellness circuit. Submit an enquiry and our specialists will tailor it for you at no obligation.

Cancellations 60+ days before departure receive a full refund minus a small admin fee. 30–59 days: 75% refund. 15–29 days: 50% refund. Under 15 days: no refund. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance.
