Romance in God's Own Country
Kerala — 'God's Own Country' — is India's most romantic destination: a land of mist-wrapped tea hills, candlelit houseboat dinners, wildlife-rich forests, and the warm, unhurried pace of South Indian life. This 6-day honeymoon journey is designed for two.
Begin in Munnar, where your hillside resort offers private plantation views and cool mountain air — a world away from everything. Days in Munnar mean leisurely walks through the tea estates, a visit to the Eravikulam National Park for the Nilgiri Tahr, and sunset cocktails at Top Station with the Western Ghats spread below.
Thekkady's Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary adds a wildlife dimension — a morning boat safari on the lake for elephant and bison sightings, an afternoon spice plantation tour, and an evening Kathakali performance (the classical Kerala dance drama) and Kalaripayattu martial arts show, the most visually spectacular performance traditions in India.
The houseboat night in Alleppey is the honeymoon centrepiece — absolute privacy, a crew that anticipates everything, a Kerala feast prepared just for two, and the backwater world drifting past in complete silence. The tour concludes in Fort Kochi, where colonial architecture, a Chinese fishing net sunset, and a farewell Kerala dinner complete one of the most beautiful journeys India offers.
What makes this journey special
Your journey, unfolded
Welcome to Kerala! Your driver meets you at Cochin Airport and begins the scenic drive into the Western Ghats — stop at the spectacular Cheeyappara Waterfalls and a roadside spice garden. Arrive at your Munnar plantation retreat by late afternoon. Evening: welcome drink on your private balcony as the tea hills turn gold in the setting sun.
A leisurely day in Munnar's stunning landscape. Begin at Eravikulam National Park — herds of Nilgiri Tahr graze on open grasslands framed by Anamudi peak (2,695m). Visit the Tea Museum for a tasting session and the story of Munnar's tea legacy. Drive to Top Station (1,700m) for the finest panoramic views in the region — best appreciated with your favourite person beside you. Afternoon: a guided walk through the tea plantation trails, ending with sundowners at the resort.
Drive south to Thekkady (about 3 hours) through cardamom and coffee country. En route, tour a spice plantation — cardamom, pepper, cloves, and vanilla growing in fragrant abundance under the forest canopy. Check in to your Thekkady resort. Afternoon: wildlife boat safari on Periyar Lake — Asian elephants at the water's edge are a near certainty; Indian bison, river otters, and kingfishers complete the picture.
Evening: a traditional Kathakali performance — the classical Kerala dance drama, where elaborately made-up and costumed dancers enact stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The pre-show makeup demonstration is as fascinating as the performance itself.
Morning: a guided nature walk inside Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary — the most intimate way to experience the forest, with a naturalist guide who knows every bird call and animal trail. A second chance at elephant sightings in the peaceful early morning light. Visit the Kumily spice market — cardamom, pepper, and Thekkady rose water packed beautifully for gifts.
Evening: Kalaripayattu — Kerala's ancient martial art, considered the mother of all Asian martial arts. The performance is breathtakingly athletic and precise. A romantic candlelit dinner at your resort completes the evening.
Drive west to Alleppey and board your private houseboat — just the two of you, a captain, and a cook. This is the honeymoon centrepiece: absolute privacy on a beautifully outfitted houseboat drifting through the most romantic waterscape in India. Your cook prepares an entirely private Kerala feast: prawn moilee, Kerala fish curry, coconut rice, avial, banana flower thoran, and freshly made appam, served on the sun deck. Watch the backwater world drift past — lotus ponds, paddy fields, and fishing villages — as the light softens into golden hour. Moor in a quiet canal as night falls. Stars, silence, and the sound of water.
A slow, gentle final morning on the backwaters as the canal world wakes. Disembark after breakfast and drive to Fort Kochi (1.5 hours). A farewell walk through one of India's most romantic port towns: the Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against the morning sky, St Francis Church, the Dutch Palace's extraordinary murals, and the Jewish Synagogue in Mattancherry's Jew Town. A final Kerala meal at a restaurant on the harbour before transfer to Cochin Airport. Kerala will linger long after you leave.

Your questions, answered
Kerala is widely considered one of India's two finest honeymoon destinations (alongside Kashmir). The combination of misty hill stations, private houseboat nights on the backwaters, intimate boutique resorts, excellent food, and the warm, unhurried pace of South Indian life creates the perfect romantic atmosphere. The houseboat night is particularly special — absolute privacy, extraordinary scenery, and a cuisine that is among the finest in India.
We notify all hotels and the houseboat crew in advance that this is a honeymoon trip. This typically results in welcome flower arrangements, fruit and sweets in the room, special table decorations at dinner, and additional personal touches by the property's hospitality team. If you have specific requests — a private candlelit dinner in the plantation, a sunrise picnic, or an Ayurvedic couple's treatment — please let us know and we will arrange it.
October to March is ideal — the post-monsoon season, lush and green, comfortable temperatures (25–30°C on the coast, cooler in the hills), and the backwaters are navigable. December and January are peak season — book well in advance. Avoid June–August when the southwest monsoon is heaviest.
Absolutely. Every Discover India tour is fully private and tailored to your preferences. We can adjust the duration, swap destinations, change hotel categories, or add extensions such as Wayanad, Varkala, or a longer Kovalam beach stay. Submit an enquiry and our Kerala specialists will redesign it for you at no obligation.
We include carefully selected hotels — plantation retreats in the hills, heritage homestays in the backwaters, and well-appointed resort properties on the coast. All are personally vetted by our team. Upgrades to luxury tree-houses, lake-view villas, and boutique resorts are available on request.
A traditional Kerala houseboat (kettuvallam) is a converted rice barge — typically 60–80 feet long — fitted with bedrooms, a living area, a kitchen, and an open-air sun deck. Your crew (captain and cook) prepare all meals fresh on board: fish curry, coconut rice, prawn dishes, appam, and Kerala thali. You moor in a quiet canal for the night, away from traffic. It is one of the most uniquely peaceful experiences in India.
Most nationalities can apply for an Indian e-Visa online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Processing takes 3–5 business days. Apply at least 2 weeks before travel.
Cancellations 60+ days before departure: full refund minus admin fee. 30–59 days: 75% refund. 15–29 days: 50% refund. Under 15 days: no refund. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.
