A 5-day journey into Karnataka's deepest historical roots — Hampi, the UNESCO World Heritage capital of the once-mighty Vijayanagara Empire, and Badami, capital of the early Chalukyan dynasty, with its extraordinary rock-cut cave temples and the nearby masterpieces of Pattadakal and Aihole.
Hampi's boulder-strewn landscape holds the ruins of what was, in the 14th-16th centuries, one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world — the Virupaksha Temple (still an active site of worship after some 1,300 years), the iconic stone chariot at Vittala Temple, the Lotus Mahal, and the Elephant Stables, all spread across a UNESCO World Heritage zone best explored over two unhurried days.
From Hampi, the journey continues to Badami, where the Chalukya dynasty carved four remarkable cave temples directly into a sandstone cliff face in the 6th century CE, overlooking the artificial Agastya Lake. Nearby, Pattadakal showcases an extraordinary fusion of North and South Indian temple architectural styles side by side, while Aihole — sometimes called the 'cradle of Indian temple architecture' — holds over 120 temples marking the very experimental beginnings of the Chalukyan style.

Welcome to Bangalore! Depending on your preference and arrival time, either drive directly to Hampi (approximately 340 km, ~6.5-7 hours) or take an overnight train to the nearest railhead (Hospet, with a final short drive to Hampi). On arrival, check in to your hotel, with the evening free to rest after the journey.
After breakfast, a full day exploring Hampi's UNESCO World Heritage ruins. The Virupaksha Temple, an active site of worship since the 7th century, with its towering gopuram visible across the Hampi Bazaar ruins. Vittala Temple, home to the iconic stone chariot (now a symbol closely associated with Karnataka tourism) and the famous musical pillars, said to produce different musical notes when struck. Within the Royal Enclosure, visit the Lotus Mahal, an elegant pavilion blending Hindu and Islamic architectural styles, and the Elephant Stables, built to house the royal ceremonial elephants.
After breakfast, check out and drive to Badami (approximately 145 km, ~3.5 hours), the former capital of the early Chalukya dynasty. On arrival, check in to your hotel. In the afternoon, visit the famous Badami Cave Temples — four rock-cut shrines carved directly into a sandstone cliff in the 6th century CE, overlooking the artificial Agastya Lake. Climb to the Badami Fort above the caves for panoramic views over the town and lake.
After breakfast, visit Pattadakal (approximately 22 km from Badami) — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where North Indian (Nagara) and South Indian (Dravidian) temple architectural styles stand side by side, the Virupaksha and Mallikarjuna Temples among its finest examples. Continue to Aihole (approximately 35 km further), often called the 'cradle of Indian temple architecture' for its more than 120 temples, marking the experimental early phase from which the mature Chalukyan style emerged — the Durga Temple and Lad Khan Temple are particularly notable. Return to Badami for an overnight stay.
A relaxed final morning — perhaps a last walk around Agastya Lake or a visit to the small Archaeological Museum near the cave temples. After breakfast, check out and drive to Hubli Airport (approximately 105 km, the nearest regional airport) or continue the longer drive back to Bangalore (approximately 480 km) for your departure flight. Tour concludes.
